Women's Tennis Battles Geneseo in 9-0 SUNYAC Setback

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team battled throughout but wound up falling by a 9-0 final to SUNY Geneseo in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Friday afternoon at the Binghamton Tennis Center.

Senior Sarah Hoeffner (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) took a set from her opponent at No. 2 singles, winning by a 6-3 count in the first set. After dropping the second set, 6-2, she was edged narrowly in a super tiebreaker, 10-6.

Sophomore Samantha Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) won four games in a 6-4 setback in the first set at No. 3 singles, while all three doubles flights won at least three games. Junior Alyana Leandry (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and sophomore Jacqueline Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) fell, 8-4, at the No. 2 spot, while sophomore Nicole Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and Samantha Svantner dropped an 8-4 decision at the No. 3 position.

"Overall, the team played phenomenally against a former SUNYAC championship team," head coach Kelci Henn said. "I couldn't be more pleased with how each player performed, especially in doubles. We were strong at the net and held the baseline. So many points went to deuce that our overall score doesn't reflect the way they all played. We're optimistic heading into the final day of the regular season."

Plattsburgh State falls to 7-7 overall (2-4 SUNYAC) with the loss and closes out the regular season tomorrow at 9 a.m. against Fredonia. Geneseo rises to 7-6 overall (3-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next faces SUNY Oneonta tomorrow at 3 p.m.
