PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Sophomore forward
Luk Jirousek (Whitehorse, Yukon/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) scored the game-tying goal with 24.8 seconds left in regulation and sophomore goaltender
Jacob Hearne (Ennismore, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) made a season-high 35 saves, as the Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team battled to a 2-2 overtime tie against four-time defending conference champion and third-ranked SUNY Geneseo on Saturday evening at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.
Geneseo is ranked at No. 3 in the DCU/USCHO.com Men's Division III Top-15 Poll.
Geneseo appeared to be in the driver's seat after holding on to a 2-1 lead through a five-minute major, which included 1:44 of a 5-on-3 power play for the Cardinals, late in the third period. With the goalie pulled in favor of the extra attacker, graduate student defenseman
Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) found Jirousek in the right circle, and Jirousek eased his way into the high slot before using a screened goalie to score high glove side. Junior forward
Bennett Stockdale (Ottawa, Ontario/University of Alabama in Huntsville) earned the secondary assist on the score.
In overtime, both teams had opportunities to score, and Geneseo went on the power play with 31 seconds left in the frame. Senior forward Justin Cmunt ended up taking two slap shot attempts from the right circle, the last of which with 10 seconds remaining required Hearne to make a blocker save. The Knights were unable to get a shot attempt off after winning an offensive-zone face-off, and the two teams escaped with a tie.
Plattsburgh State moves to 3-1-2 overall (2-1-1 SUNYAC) with the tie and next hosts Fredonia on Friday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. Geneseo moves to 4-1-1 (2-0-1 SUNYAC) with the result and hosts Oswego State on Friday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m.
Junior defenseman
Cory Doney (Northfield Falls, Vt./Vermont Lumberjacks) opened scoring at 15:45 of the first, burying his first goal of the season. With traffic in the slot, sophomore forward
Jake Lanyi (North Salem, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) and junior forward
Paul Bryer (Clarkston, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club) each got a piece of the puck before Doney flipped a shot in glove side.
Geneseo converted a power-play goal skating 5-on-3 52 seconds into the second period, as graduate student defenseman Matthew Doran scored glove side from the high slot. Cmunt and first-year defenseman Dakota Zarudny earned assists on the goal.
The Knights took a 2-1 lead 4:28 into the third period, as junior defenseman Diarmad DiMurro sent a puck down to the left of the goal that Hearne tried to cover up, and sophomore forward Peter Morgan poked a shot in through the five-hole. Senior forward Bryan Zurowski was credited with the secondary assist.
Plattsburgh State finished with a 42-37 edge in shots on goal. The Knights went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Cardinals were scoreless in four chances.
Geneseo's senior goaltender Matt Petizian made 40 saves.
