PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – First-year goaltender
Eli Shiller (Toronto, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) posted his first collegiate shutout with a 23-save effort, helping backstop the Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team to a 3-0 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over Fredonia on Saturday evening at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
The Cardinals finished with a 44-23 edge in shots on goal, while both teams were scoreless on the power play; Plattsburgh State was 0-for-2, while Fredonia was 0-for-4. Notably, the Cardinals held the Blue Devils scoreless on a five-minute major power play in the third period and scored a shorthanded goal during that penalty kill.
Plattsburgh State rises to 4-1-2 overall (3-1-1 SUNYAC) with the win and hosts Buffalo State tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. Fredonia falls to 1-5-0 overall (1-2-0 SUNYAC) with the loss and visits SUNY Potsdam tomorrow at 7 p.m.
With 7:14 gone in the first period, sophomore forward
Jake Lanyi (North Salem, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) got the Cardinals on the board. Sophomore forward/defenseman
Jagger Benson (Lynnfield, Mass./Cranbrook Bucks) led junior forward
Paul Bryer (Clarkston, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club) ahead with a pass in the neutral zone, and Bryer took advantage of a Fredonia skater falling down to get a 2-on-1 advantage in the offensive zone. Bryer sent a pass across the slot to Lanyi, and Lanyi scored glove side to give the Cardinals the early lead.
Fredonia outshot Plattsburgh State, 13-8, in the second period, earning two power-play opportunities during the stanza. The Blue Devils were unable to capitalize on their chances, however, as Shiller stood tall to keep the Cardinals ahead heading into the second intermission.
With the Cardinals on the penalty kill for five minutes as a result of a five-minute major, Plattsburgh State scored an insurance marker when senior forward
Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) scored shorthanded 3:14 into the third. First-year forward
Riley Sutherland (Burlington, Ontario/St. Michael's Buzzers) broke Tretowicz free with a stretch pass into the neutral zone, and Tretowicz received the puck before skating past the defense for a one-on-one with the goalie. Tretowicz took a shot that the goaltender turned aside with a chest save before burying the rebound blocker side.
First-year forward
Joshua Belgrave (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Cougars) added insurance at the 12:09 mark of the third period, scoring his first collegiate goal. Lanyi passed to senior forward
Brendan Young (Lefroy, Ontario/Blind River Beavers) in the defensive zone, and Young helped lead the rush along with Belgrave. Young passed to Belgrave in the defensive zone, and Belgrave skated into the right circle before scoring blocker side.
Fredonia's junior goaltender Logan Dyck made 41 saves in the loss.
