HOLDERNESS, N.H. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 overtime tie against reigning Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) champion Plymouth State University in the 2022-23 regular-season opener for both teams on Friday evening at Hanaway Rink.
The Cardinals finished the evening with a 37-29 edge in shots on goal, while both teams went 0-for-5 on the power play. Plattsburgh State's game-tying goal from sophomore defenseman

Plattsburgh State moves to 0-0-1 with the result and next visits Castleton University tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. Plymouth State moves to 0-0-1 with the result and next visits Babson College at 4 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
After a scoreless first period, junior forward
Trey Thomas (Williams Lake, British Columbia/Brooks Bandits) put the Cardinals on the board at the 16:06 mark of the second. First-year forward
Ryan Bonfield (Kemptville, Ontario/Brockville Braves) carried the puck into the zone on a 3-on-2 rush and sent a short pass to sophomore forward
Jake Lanyi (North Salem, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers). Lanyi skated to the goal line extended and passed out in front to Thomas, who buried a shot in traffic from the slot. It marked the first collegiate point for Bonfield.
At the 19:06 mark of the second period, Plymouth State tied the score at 1-all. The Panthers won an offensive-zone face-off, and senior defenseman Niks Krollis passed D-to-D to senior defenseman Ted Austin, and Austin passed back to Krollis in the high slot. Krollis then ripped a shot through traffic from just inside the blue line and scored glove side. Junior forward Jeromey Rancourt also earned an assist on the play.
With 4:57 elapsed in the third, the Panthers took a 2-1 advantage. Sophomore forward Ethan Stuckless chipped the puck out of a scrum in the neutral zone, and sophomore forward Anton Jellvik took control in the offensive zone along the outer hash marks of the right circle. He skated to the bottom of the right circle and scored on the short side. Junior forward Carson Lanceleve also earned an assist on the score.
Ring buried the game-tying marker at 8:29 of the third period just four seconds after the end of a Panther penalty. Junior defenseman
Cory Doney (Northfield Falls, Vt./Vermont Lumberjacks) passed to Ring from the right point, and Ring blasted a shot from the high slot that beat the goaltender high glove side. Junior forward
Paul Bryer (Clarkston, MIch./Islanders Hockey Club) also earned an assist.
Graduate student goaltender
Kyle Alaverdy (Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador/Castleton University) made 26 saves in his Cardinal debut, while senior goaltender Brendahn Brawley turned aside 35 shots for Plymouth State.
