CASTLETON, Vt. – Graduate student defenseman
Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) scored twice and sophomore goaltender
Jacob Hearne (Ennismore, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) had a 27-save shutout, as the Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team topped Castleton University, 5-0, on Saturday evening at Spartan Arena in non-conference action. It marked Hearne's first collegiate shutout.
The Cardinals held a 35-27 edge in shots on goal and went 1-for-2 on the power play. The Spartans were unable to capitalize on five power-play opportunities.
In addition to Araujo, junior forwards
Carson Gallagher (Courtice, Ontario/Sacred Heart University),
Bennett Stockdale (Ottawa, Ontario/University of Alabama in Huntsville) and
Paul Bryer (Clarkston, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club) each notched a goal and an assist.
Plattsburgh State rises to 1-0-1 overall with the win and next visits rival Oswego State on Friday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. to open State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play.
Araujo opened scoring on the power play at 7:41 of the first period. Senior defenseman
Jacob Modry (Albany, N.Y./Merrimack College) passed D-to-D to Araujo on the right point, and Araujo scored on a one-time shot low glove side.
At 11:35 of the first, Araujo struck again, intercepting a clearing pass and scoring on a shot from the high slot that deflected off the inside of the right post and into the back of the net.
Bryer made it a 3-0 game at 13:26 of the second period. Gallagher skated around a defender in the slot and took a shot that was turned aside, while Bryer poked the rebound through the five-hole.
Gallagher tallied just 47 seconds into the third period, as he capitalized on a give-and-go with Stockdale and buried the puck blocker side from the slot. Stockdale rounded out scoring at the 13:00 mark of the third period when he scored glove side on the rush after helping force a turnover in the neutral zone.
Sophomore goaltender Dominic Rodrigue made 30 saves in the loss for Castleton.
