PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team fell in SUNYAC play on Friday night, dropping a 3-1 (17-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-11) State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match to SUNY Brockport in Memorial Hall.
Brockport hit .336 for the match as they controlled throughout the four sets of play. They had a strong attack as they held a 55-28 advantage over the Cards in assists and had 11 aces to Plattsburgh's seven.
Plattsburgh State falls to 4-12 overall (0-7 SUNYAC) with the loss and will welcome Geneseo to Memorial Hall tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m. Brockport rises to 15-5 overall (5-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next plays Potsdam on the road at 1 p.m. on Oct. 15.
Brockport jumped out to 2-0 lead in the match, controlling the game early on, quelling any potential momentum shifts in the Cardinal favor. However, in the third set, a strong start had Plattsburgh with an early 10-4 lead. Later on, with the help of miscues from Brockport and a couple Payton Zophy (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) service aces, the team went on a 7-0 run, taking an 18-6 lead over the Golden Eagels. Brockport regained control at the end of the set but a Maggie Lyon (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) kill ended the third set, bringing Plattsburgh in position to possibly force a third set.
In the game's final set, Brockport came out in full force, hitting at a .556 mark to take home the fourth set and SUNYAC win.
Kyleigh Ganz (Phoenix, Ariz./Seton Catholic Prep) had a strong night offensively, collecting 17 assists and three kills, while helping on the defensive end with six digs and three block assists. Lyon contributed way with eigh kills and only one error to hit .318 on the evening. Jenn Braun (Garrison, NY/Walter Panas) had seven kills for the cards to go with two solo blocks and to block assists.
For the Golden Eagles Jordan Thompson was tops on the team with 12 kills, hitting .667, while Kerri McHale had 33 assists in the Brockport win.
