No. 4 Women's Ice Hockey Skates Past SUNY Potsdam, 6-1

POTSDAM, N.Y. — No. 4 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey remained undefeated in Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) play with a 6-1 victory over SUNY Potsdam at Maxcy Ice Arena on Friday night.

Plattsburgh State (7-2-0, 6-0-0 NEWHL) travels to SUNY Canton for a NEWHL game tomorrow at 3 p.m. Potsdam (2-6-1, 0-4-1 NEWHL) hosts Buffalo State for a NEWHL game tomorrow at 3 p.m. 

Plattsburgh State took a 2-0 lead in the first period.

Junior forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) scored her eighth goal of the season as she redirected a shot by first-year defenseman Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) to make the score 1-0 at 5:27 of the first period. 

Senior forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) made the score 2-0 at 11:09 of the first period. Graduate student forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) chipped the puck out of the right corner to Unsworth. Unsworth skated around the back of the net on a wraparound play and scored on a wrist shot inside the far post. 

The Cardinals outscored the Bears, 2-1, in the second period to take a 4-1 lead into the second intermission.

Sophomore forward Mae Olshansky (Wilmette, Ill./North American Hockey Academy) scored her third goal of the season on a deke to make the score 3-0 at 10:12 of the second period. Unsworth and junior defenseman Kendall Wasik (Novi, Mich./HoneyBaked) assisted on the play. 

The Bears took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play to make the score 3-1 at 12:59 of the second period. Kaylee Merrill redirected a shot for the goal. Ellie Cleary and Lyvia Chambers assisted on the play.

Senior forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) scored her first goal of the season on a rebound to push the Cardinal lead to 4-1 at 17:39 of the second period. Senior forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) and Boric assisted on the play.

The Cardinals added on two power-play goals in the third period to make the final score 6-1.

Unsworth scored her second goal of the game to make the score 5-1 at 2:13 of the first period on a low wrist shot from the slot. Krauseneck and graduate student defenseman Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire) tallied the assists.  

Drew-Mead made the final score 6-1 with a goal at 11:58 of the third period. An initial shot by Drew-Mead was saved, but she got her own rebound and scored on a low wrist shot from close range. Wasik and first-year forward Lily Stumm (Cranberry Township, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) tallied the assists. 

Junior goaltender Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) made 16 saves to improve to 3-1-0 on the season. Hannah Barrett (1-3-0) made 43 saves for Potsdam.

The Cardinals were 2-of-5 on the power play.

Plattsburgh State outshot Potsdam, 49-17.
