CANTON, N.Y. — No. 4 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey defeated SUNY Canton, 4-1, in a Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) game on Saturday afternoon at the Roos House.
Plattsburgh State (8-2-0, 7-0-0 NEWHL), which picked up its second win in a row, next faces No. 3 Elmira College at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, as part of the Norwich East-West Hockey Classic. Canton (6-1-1, 2-1-1 NEWHL) plays a NEWHL game at SUNY Cortland at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7.
Plattsburgh State took a 1-0 lead at 11:01 of the first period. In the slot, first-year forward Lily Stumm (Cranberry Township, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) redirected a shot from the left point for her fourth goal of the season. Senior defenseman Holly Schmelzer (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and graduate student forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) assisted on the play.
The Cardinals extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal by senior forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) at 4:07 of the first period. First-year forward Riley Calhoun (New Hartford, N.Y./Bishop Kearny Selects) chipped a puck away from a Kangaroo in the neutral zone. Krauseneck got to the puck, skated into the offensive zone, evaded a defenseman, and then scored her first goal of the game with a high wrist shot.
Canton made the score 2-1 at 4:25 of the third period on a shorthanded goal. First-year defenseman Sandrene Garofalo played a pass out of the Kanagroos' defensive zone to junior forward Sarah Kosnaskie. Kosnaskie got behind the defense for a breakaway and scored on a wrist shot to the blocker side.
The Cardinals responded at 8:47 of the third period when Krauseneck tallied her second goal of the game and eighth of the season. After an initial shot by senior forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) was saved, Krauseneck got the rebound in front of the goal and scored with a quick wrist shot to make the score 3-1. Junior forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) tallied the secondary assist.
Plattsburgh State's first-year forward Bridget Orr (Excelsior, Minn./North American Hockey Academy) made the final score 4-1 with her first collegiate goal at 15:02 of the third period. Orr forced a turnover by the Canton blue line, skated in all alone, and made a deke before finishing with a high wrist shot.
Junior goaltender Chloe Beaubien (Colorado Springs, Colo./Ontario Hockey Academy) made 12 saves to earn the win in her first start of the season. Junior goaltender Sirena Alvarez (6-1-1) made 43 saves for Canton.
Plattsburgh State outshot Canton, 47-13.
