PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Sophomore forward Thomas Maia (Mississauga, Ontario/Nanaimo Clippers) scored at 14:27 of the third period and sophomore goaltender Anthony Del Tufo (Livingston, N.J./Philadelphia Revolution) recorded his first career shutout to lead Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey to a 1-0 win over SUNY Potsdam during Casella Teddy Bear Toss Night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena on Friday night.
Plattsburgh State (6-4-1, 4-2-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference [SUNYAC]) next hosts No. 6 Norwich University in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7. Potsdam plays a non-conference game at Saint Michael's College tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
Both teams had chances as play went back and forth in the first two periods of play. Plattsburgh State had four shots that hit off the post or crossbar and Potsdam had one shot that hit off the post/crossbar. The Cardinals held a 17-16 through the first two periods of play, but the game remained scoreless.
At 14:27 of the third period, Maia scored the game-winning goal. Sophomore forward Joey Mancuso (Pottstown, Pa./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) forced a turnover as Potsdam attempted to clear the puck from the Bears' defensive zone. Mancuso chipped the puck ahead to Maia, who scored on a high wrist shot from below the right face-off dot. After the goal, the fans in attendance threw teddy bears onto the ice as part of Casella Teddy Bear Toss Night. The event benefited the Clinton County Christmas Bureau.
Del Tufo (6-4-1) made 24 saves to record his first career shutout for Plattsburgh State. Senior goaltender Michael Paglucca (0-4-0) made 25 saves for Potsdam.
Plattsburgh State held a 26-24 advantage in shots on goal.
