PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team played No. 7 Norwich University to a 2-2 overtime tie on Tuesday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State (6-4-2), which honored former-team physician and Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame member (Meritorious Service/Contributor) Dr. Merritt F. Spear during a pregame ceremony, next plays a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game at SUNY Morrisville at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11. Norwich (6-1-4) hosts Hamilton College at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 1.
The game remained scoreless until 4:34 of the second period when Norwich took a 1-0 lead. Sophomore forward Patrick O'Neal chipped the puck to first-year forward Isaac Chapman in the right circle and Chapman released a quick wrist shot that beat the goaltender on the blocker side.
Plattsburgh State fell behind 2-0 when Norwich's first-year forward Clark Kerner finished off a 2-on-1 rush with a shot through the five-hole at 10:23 of the second period. Senior forward Noah Williams and first-year forward Bryan O'Mara tallied the assists.
Plattsburgh State fought back and made the score 2-1 at 14:04 of the second period. Sophomore forward Joey Mancuso (Pottstown, Pa./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) played the puck down the ice from the Cardinal defensive zone. Sophomore forward Paul Bryer (Clarkston, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club) sprinted down the ice, and icing was waved off. Bryer played the puck from behind the net to junior forward Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres), who scored his third goal of the season with a shot from the left side of the low slot.
Plattsburgh State trailed 2-1 until under three minutes to play in the third period when junior defenseman Jacob Modry (Albany, N.Y./Merrimack College) tied the game at 2-2. First-year forward Luk Jirousek (Whitehorse, Yukon/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) won an offensive-zone faceoff back to Modry, who scored with a slap shot from the top of the slot.
Neither team scored in the remainder of regulation or overtime as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Sophomore goaltender Anthony Del Tufo (Livingston, N.J./Philadelphia Revolution), who made 19 saves for Plattsburgh State, has a 6-4-2 record on the season. Sophomore goaltender Drennen Atherton (2-0-4) stopped 35 shots for Norwich.
Shots on goal were 37-21 in favor of Plattsburgh State.
Neither team scored on the power play. Plattsburgh State was 0-of-2 and Norwich was 0-of-3.
