Stockdale and Mancuso Lead Men's Ice Hockey to 6-5 Comeback Overtime Win over SUNY Cortland

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Sophomore forward Bennett Stockdale (Ottawa, Ontario/Alabama Huntsville) scored the game-tying and game-winning goals, and sophomore forward Joey Mancuso (Pottstown, Pa./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) recorded a hat trick to lead Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey to a 6-5 come-from-behind overtime victory over SUNY Cortland on Friday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (2-1-0, 1-0-0 State University of New York Athletic Conference [SUNYAC]) hosts SUNYAC foe Oswego State tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. Cortland plays a SUNYAC game at SUNY Potsdam tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Plattsburgh state trailed, 5-3, over halfway through the third period, but the Cardinals would score the final three goals of the game to complete the 6-5 victory.

First-year forward Jake Lanyi (North Salem, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) stole the puck behind the Cortland net and played the puck in front of the goal and off a defenseman's skate into the goal to make the score 5-4 at 11:48 of the third period.

As time wound down in regulation, the stage was set for Stockdale's heroics. With 2:31 remaining in the third period, Stockdale redirected a shot from the point by sophomore forward Thomas Maia (Mississauga, Ontario) to tie the game at 5-5. Then in the three-on-three overtime period, Stockdale took a pass in front of the net from senior defenseman Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) and Stockdale banged home the game-winning goal with 1:08 remaining to make the final score 6-5.

In the first period, Cortland took a 2-0 lead on a power-play goal by first-year defenseman Johnny Facchini at 3:35 and an even-strength goal scored by sophomore forward Nate Berke at 7:51. Mancuso scored his first of three goals on the night on the power-play at 12:14 of the first period to make the score 2-1. Mancuso got to a rebound on the left side of the net and quickly lifted a shot over the goaltender's left shoulder for the goal.

In the second period, each team scored twice to make the score 4-3 heading into the second intermission. Senior forward Ethan Homitz scored a power-play goal for Cortland at 2:02 of the period to push the Red Dragon lead to 3-1. However, Mancuso answered for Plattsburgh State with his second goal of the night on the power-play at the 6:58 mark. Junior forward Mitchell Hale (Oakfield, N.Y./Johnstown Tomahawks) played a pass across the front of the net to Mancuso, who scored with a one-timer from the left side of the slot to make the score 3-2. Sophomore forward Sutter Donegan extended the Cortland lead to 4-2 with a power-play goal at 17:51.
