MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Playing for the FirstLight ShootOut championship, the Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team lost to No. 6 Norwich University, 5-2, on Sunday at Middlebury College's Chip Kenyon '85 Arena.
Plattsburgh State (5-4-1), which finished as the runner-up in the FirstLight ShootOut, had sophomore forward Bennett Stockdale (Ottawa, Ontario/Alabama Huntsville) and junior forward Marcus Mitchell (Kelowna, British Columbia/University of Alaska Anchorage) named to the all-tournament team.
The Cardinals next host SUNY Potsdam at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, on Casella Teddy Bear Toss Night. Norwich (5-0-3) hosts Southern Maine at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3.
Norwich scored twice in the first period to take a 2-0 lead over Plattsburgh State into the first intermission.
Sophomore defenseman Joe Nagle made the score 1-0 with a power-play goal at 7:49 of the first period. Nagle scored on a screened wrist shot from the high slot. First-year forwards Clark Kerner and Bryan O'Mara tallied the assists.
Senior forward Brett Ouderkik gave Norwich a 2-0 lead when he blasted a one-timer from the left faceoff dot at 12:25 of the first period. Senior defenseman Cale List and junior forward Phil Elgstam garnered the assists.
Plattsburgh State fought back and scored the only two goals of the second period to tie the game at 2-2 going into the second intermission.
After an initial shot by junior defenseman Jacob Modry (Albany, N.Y./Merrimack College) from the left circle was saved, Stockdale got the rebound in front of the net and promptly scored with a wrist shot to make the score 2-1 at 12:55 of the second period. Junior forward Mitchell Hale (Oakfield, N.Y./Johntsown Tomahawks) tallied the secondary assist on Stockdale's ninth goal of the season.
Under two minutes later, sophomore forward Thomas Maia (Mississauga, Ontario/Nanaimo Clippers) tied the game at 2-2 with his first collegiate goal on the power-play at 14:41 of the second period. He one-timed a pass from Stockdale in the slot. Junior forward Hunter Alden (Walla Walla, Wash./Northeast Generals) tallied the secondary assist.
However, Plattsburgh State would not score again and Norwich scored three times in the third period to make the final score 5-2 in favor of Norwich.
Elgstam made the score 3-2 when he redirected a shot from the right point past the goaltender at 4:42 of the third period. Senior defenseman Devon Becker and first-year forward Alex Lewis assisted on the play.
Senior forward Noah Williams scored an empty-net goal to make the score 4-2 at 18:44 of the third period. Junior forward Breadyn Aubin assisted on the play.
Norwich's graduate student forward Scott Swanson made the final score 5-2 when he scored on a wrist shot from the right circle at 19:09.5 of the third period. Junior defenseman Callum Jones and first-year forward Holden Doggett recorded the assists.
Sophomore goaltender Anthony Del Tufo (Livingston, N.J./Philadelphia Revolution), who is 5-4-1 on the season, made 18 saves for Plattsburgh State. Junior goaltender Andrew Albano (4-0-0) made 24 saves for Norwich.
