BUFFALO, N.Y. — Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey scored four unanswered goals to break a 1-1 tie and pull away from Buffalo State for a 5-1 victory on Friday night at Buffalo State Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State (3-3-1, 2-2-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference [SUNYAC]) plays a SUNYAC game at Fredonia tomorrow at 7 p.m. Buffalo State (2-4-0, 1-1-0) hosts SUNY Potsdam for a SUNYAC game tomorrow at 7 p.m.
Scoring for the second game in a row, junior forward Hunter Alden (Walla Walla, Wash./Northeast Generals) gave Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead 53 seconds into the game. Alden wired a wrist shot from the slot into the upper-left corner.
After Buffalo State tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by A.J. Marinelli — assisted by Connor Bizal and Tyler Vanuden — at 6:43 of the first period, Plattsburgh State retook a 2-1 lead on sophomore forward Bennett Stockdale's (Ottawa, Ontario/Alabama Huntsville) team-leading seventh goal of the season at 16:46 of the first period. Stockdale redirected a pass from Alden through the goaltender's five-hole. Junior defenseman Ryan Hogg (Duncan, British Columbia/Islanders Hockey Club) tallied the secondary assist.
In the second period, the Cardinals extended their lead to 4-1 with two more goals.
On the power play at 6:19 of the second period, sophomore forward Joey Mancuso (Pottstown, Pa./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) scored with a wrist shot from the high slot that beat the goaltender on the blocker side to make the score 3-1. Sophomore forward Carson Gallagher (Courtice, Ontario/Sacred Heart University) and first-year forward Luk Jirousek (Whitehorse, Yukon/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) recorded the assists.
Sophomore defenseman Cory Doney (Northfield Falls, Vt./Vermont Lumberjacks) scored his first collegiate goal to give Plattsburgh State a 4-1 lead at 10:13 of the second period. Doney scored on a wrist shot from the slot that found the upper-right corner of the net. Mancuso and senior defenseman Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) tallied the assists.
Junior forward Marcus Mitchell (Kelowna, British Columbia/University of Alaska Anchorage) capped off the scoring with his first goal in a Cardinal uniform. On a delayed penalty, Mitchell skated on the ice as the sixth skater and sprinted to the left post where he received a pass from Hogg and quickly deposited a shot into the back of the net at 11:02 of the third period.
Sophomore goaltender Anthony Del Tufo (Livingston, N.J./Philadelphia Revolution) improved to 3-3-1 on the season with a 29-save performance for Plattsburgh State.
Junior netminder Emil Norrman (2-3-0) made 34 saves for Buffalo State.
Plattsburgh State finished 1-of-3 on the power play and Buffalo State went 0-of-1.
Shots were 39-30 in favor of Plattsburgh State.
