Men's Ice Hockey Scores Three Third-Period Goals to Defeat Fredonia, 5-2

FREDONIA, N.Y. — Plattsburgh State Men's Ice Hockey scored three goals in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and defeat Fredonia, 5-2, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game on Saturday night at Steele Hall Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (4-3-1, 3-2-1 SUNYAC) next faces No. 4 Norwich University on Friday, Nov. 26, as part of the FirstLight Shootout in Middlebury, Vt. Fredonia (4-3-0, 2-1-0 SUNYAC) plays a non-conference game at Nazareth on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m.

Each team scored once in the first period to make the score 1-1 after 20:00 of play.

Plattsburgh State took a 1-0 lead when junior forward Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) scored a power-play goal at 15:26 of the first period. After an initial shot by sophomore forward Trey Thomas (Williams Lake, British Columbia/Brooks Bandits) was saved, Tretowicz knocked in the rebound for the goal. First-year defenseman Jack Ring (Hingham, Mass./Northeast Generals) tallied the secondary assist.

Less than a minute later, first-year forward Johnny Malandruccolo scored for Fredonia on a back-door play at 16:23 of the first period. Sophomore forward David Sudbrink and sophomore defenseman Kurri Woodford garnered the assists on the goal that tied the score at 1-1. 

In the second period, each team scored a power-play goal to make the score 2-2 going into the second intermission.

Sophomore forward Joey Mancuso (Pottstown, Pa./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) scored a power-play goal on a one-timer from the left circle to give Plattsburgh State a 2-1 lead at 13:55 of the second period. Tretowicz and Ring assisted on the play.

Woodford scored for Fredonia on the power-play at 18:42 with a screened wrist shot from the left circle to tie the score at 2-2. Sophomore forward Jake Blackwell garnered the assist.

The Cardinals scored three unanswered goals in the third period to complete the 5-2 victory. 

Sophomore forward Bennett Stockdale (Ottawa, Ontario/Alabama Huntsville) scored the game-winning goal on the power play 21 seconds into the third period. An initial shot from the point by junior defenseman Ryan Hogg (Duncan, British Columbia/Islanders Hockey Club) was saved. However, junior forward Hunter Alden (Walla Walla, Wash./Northeast Generals) got to the rebound and passed the puck to Stockdale, who scored with a wrist shot from the left circle to make the score 3-2.

At 3:27 of the third period, junior forward Mitchell Hale (Oakfield, N.Y./Johnstown Tomahawks) scored on a sharp-angled wrist shot from the left circle to make the score 4-2.

First-year forward Jake Lanyi (North Salem, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) made the score 5-2 with his second goal of the season on the power play at 15:34 of the third period. Lanyi finished off a rush with a shot from the slot into the upper-right corner of the net. Sophomore forward Thomas Maia (Mississauga, Ontario/Nanaimo Clippers) garnered the primary assist.

Sophomore goaltender Anthony Del Tufo (Livingston, N.J./Philadelphia Revolution) improved to 4-3-1 on the season with a 23-save performance for Plattsburgh State.   

Sophomore goaltender Logan Dyck (4-3-0) made 40 saves for Fredonia. 

Plattsburgh State finished 4-of-6 on the power play and Fredonia was 1-of-2.
