Women's Soccer Trounces SUNY Canton, 8-0, in Rainy Regular-Season Finale

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Playing in wind-driven rain, Plattsburgh State women's soccer trounced SUNY Canton, 8-0, in its regular-season finale on Tuesday night at the Field House Complex.

Plattsburgh State (12-3-2), which is the No. 2 seed in the upcoming State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament and earned a first-round bye, will host either third-seeded SUNY Cortland or sixth-seeded SUNY Brockport in the semifinal round on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Canton (2-13-1) faces Cazenovia College in the first round of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30. The match is being played at SUNY Delhi.

Plattsburgh State, which outshot Canton, 49-0, in the match, received two goals each from senior forward Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown), senior forward Emily Frodyma (Watervliet, N.Y./Catholic Central) and first-year midfielder Catrina Maltes (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville). Sophomore midfielder Sophia Hatziyianis (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and senior midfielder Erin Metzger (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) contributed one goal each.

Plattsburgh State controlled the match from the start and the Cardinals' offensive pressure paid off in the 17th minute when Villemaire tallied her first goal of the night, with senior forward Taylor Tous (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) assisting on the play.

Just under two minutes later Frodyma scored an unassisted goal in the 19th minute to make the score 2-0.

The score remained the same until under six minutes to play in the first half when Frodyma took a pass from senior midfielder Allison Seidman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and scored her second goal of the night to make the score 3-0 in the 40th minute. Frodyma leads the SUNYAC in both goals (12) and points (29) on the season.

The Cardinal offense erupted for five more goals in the second half to complete the 8-0 win over the Kangaroos.

Villemaire tallied her second goal of the night and ninth of the season, assisted by senior midfielder Lauren Vellecca (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) in the 53rd minute to make the score 4-0. Villemaire, who has scored at least one goal in seven of the Cardinals' last eight matches, ranks second in the SUNYAC in goals (9) and tied for second in points (22) this season.

In the 58th minute, Metzger tallied her first goal of the season when she converted a penalty-kick opportunity that made the score 5-0.

Just over four minutes later, Maltes tallied her first collegiate goal in the 62nd minute to make the score 6-0. First-year midfielder Allison Brown (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) recorded her first collegiate point with an assist on the play.

Hatzyiyianis then scored her first career goal (unassisted) in the 67th minute to push the Cardinal lead to 7-0.

Maltes capped off the scoring surge in the 80th minute with her second goal of the match. First-year midfielder Ella Santomassimo (Poughquag, N.Y./Arlington) notched her first career point with an assist on the play.

Making her first career start, first-year goalkeeper Payton Couture (Redford, N.Y./Saranac) earned her first collegiate victory and shutout for Plattsburgh State.

Kylar Williams (2-9-1) made 17 saves for Canton. The Kangaroos also had two team saves in the match.
