Women's Soccer Falls to SUNY Cortland, 3-0, in SUNYAC Tournament Semifinals

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The second-seeded Plattsburgh State women's soccer team fell to third-seeded SUNY Cortland, 3-0, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament semifinal match on Wednesday afternoon at the Field House Complex.

With the loss, Plattsburgh State (12-4-2) is eliminated from the SUNYAC Tournament. The Cardinals await the 2021 NCAA Division III women's soccer selection show at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 8, to see if they will earn an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. Cortland (10-4-3) advances to the SUNYAC Tournament championship match against top-seeded SUNY Geneseo at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Nov. 6, in Geneseo, N.Y.

Cortland scored three first-half goals to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. Jaden Galluzzo made the score 1-0 in the third minute of the match. Alannah O'Shea played a long ball down the field into the Cardinals' defensive third. Galluzzo beat a Cardinal defender to the ball, gained possession, and quickly unleashed a shot past the Cardinal goalkeeper, who had come out of the net in an attempt to get to the ball first.

The score remained 1-0 until the 16th minute of the match when Galluzzo scored her second goal of the game and her 11th of the season. Quick touches by Lizzy Sbatelle and Sabrina Rodriguez sprung Galluzzo on a run behind the Cardinal defense and into the right side of the 18-yard box. The goalkeeper attempted to come out to get to the ball before Galluzzo could shoot. However, Galluzo fired a shot that glanced off the goalkeeper and went into the net to make the score 2-0.

Cortland's Isabella Auth would score what turned out to be the final goal of the match to make the score 3-0 in the 36th minute. Galluzzo dribbled from right to left outside the top of the 18-yard box, before feeding a pass to Auth, who made a run into the left side of the 18-yard box. Auth one-timed the pass with a right-footed strike that went into the upper-right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.

Up 3-0, Cortland played a defensive strategy in the second half of the match and stifled the Plattsburgh State offense. The Cardinals were held to mostly long-range shots. A few times, Plattsburgh State had scoring chances closer to the goal, but the shots were stopped by the Cortland Goalkeeper. The Cardinals were unable to score and suffered the 3-0 setback.

Junior goalkeeper Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic), who made six saves for Plattsburgh State, is 11-4-2 on the season. Lexi Ramonetti (8-1-2) stopped 11 shots for Cortland.

Plattsburgh State held a 22-13 edge in shots. Plattsburgh State's senior forward Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) led all players in shots (12) and shots on goal (6).

Head coach Tania Armellino, who has an 80-46-9 coaching record in her eight years at Plattsburgh State, has guided the Cardinals to seven consecutive appearances in the SUNYAC Tournament semifinals. Armellino led Plattsburgh State to a 7-2-0 record in SUNYAC regular-season play this season — the most conference wins for the program since 2010 (7-1-1).
