PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team defeated St. Michael's College, 3-0, in a home exhibition game on Saturday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State begins regular-season play with a home game against Plymouth State University at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29. The Purple Knights play at SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m.
All three goals came in the first period of the game. Junior forward Mitchell Hale (Oakfield, N.Y./Johnstown Tomahawks) opened the scoring with a goal at the 5:23 mark. Sophomore forward Joey Mancuso (Pottstown, Pa./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) and sophomore forward Pavel Kharin (Ann Arbor, Mich./Johnstown Tomahawks) tallied the assists.
Less than four minutes later, junior defenseman Ryan Hogg scored an unassisted power-play goal to make the score 2-0 at 9:01 of the first period.
The scoring for the first period and the game was capped off by sophomore forward Bennett Stockdale (Ottawa, Ontario/Alabama Huntsville) at the 12:13 mark. Junior forward Hunter Alden (Walla Walla, Wash./Northeast Generals) and senior defenseman Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) recorded the assists.
Senior goaltender Brandon Wells (Spirit River, Alberta/Melville Millionaires), who started for Plattsburgh State, made eight saves in 28:57 played. Sophomore goaltender Anthony Del Tufo (Livingston, N.J./Philadelphia Revolution) stopped 10 shots in 30:33 played.
Hugo Turcotte made 21 saves for the Purple Knights.
Plattsburgh State held a 24-18 advantage in shots on goal in the game.
The two teams played a five-minute three-on-three overtime period following regulation, with each team scoring once.
