Women's Soccer Falls to SUNY Geneseo, 2-1, in Double Overtime on Senior Day

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 double-overtime setback to SUNY Geneseo in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match on Senior Day at the Field House Complex on Saturday.

Plattsburgh State (9-3-2, 6-2-0 SUNYAC), which clinched a berth in the SUNYAC Tournament after Friday's win over SUNY Brockport, recognized its 10 seniors following the match. The Cardinals next host Clarkson University for a non-conference match at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19. Geneseo (11-2-1, 6-0-1 SUNYAC) plays a conference game at Buffalo State at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22.

The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when Lindsay Wright scored her fifth goal of the season. Wright took a shot from outside the top of the 18-yard box. Plattsburgh State's junior goalkeeper Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) jumped in an attempt to make the save, but the ball glanced off of Ennis' fingertips and went into the goal.

The Cardinals trailed 1-0 until the 79th minute when senior forward Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) scored her sixth goal of the season. Sophomore defender Kayla Myers (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Saranac), outside the top of the 18-yard box, played the ball into the box. In heavy rain, Villemaire got to the ball in the six-yard box and scored with a close-range shot that deflected off a defender and found the back of the goal to tie the game at 1-1.

The score remained tied and the match headed to overtime. After neither team scored in the first overtime, it looked as if the game might end tied. However, with time winding down in the second overtime period, Geneseo gained possession of the ball after a Plattsburgh State goal kick. Liv Raucci corralled the ball and quickly fired a long-range shot into the left side of the Plattsburgh State goal to end the match with 14.9 seconds remaining in the game and give the Knights a 2-1 double-overtime victory.

Julia Ennis (9-3-2) made five saves for Plattsburgh State. Angel Bennett (6-0-1) made four saves for Geneseo.
