Kirsten Villemaire's 89th-Minute Goal Propels Women's Soccer to 2-1 win over Clarkson University

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Senior forward Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) scored in the 89th minute to break a 1-1 tie and propel Plattsburgh State women's soccer to a 2-1 non-conference victory over Clarkson University on Tuesday night at the Field House Complex.

Plattsburgh State (10-3-2) concludes the SUNYAC regular season with a road match against SUNY Potsdam at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23. Clarkson (4-7-2) plays a Liberty League road game against Union College at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23.

With the match tied at 1-1 and looking like it was headed towards overtime, sophomore defender Nora Fitzgerald (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) dribbled through the Cardinal attacking third. Fitzgerald evaded defenders outside the top of the 18-yard box and played a pass forward to Villemaire in the 18-yard box. Villemaire scored the game-winning goal with a shot into the lower-left corner of the net with 1:37 remaining in regulation. Villemaire, who has seven goals this season, has scored in six consecutive matches for the Cardinals.

In the first half, Plattsburgh State took a 1-0 lead when senior forward Emily Frodyma (Watervliet, N.Y./Catholic Central) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season. With the ball in the right side of the 18-yard box, Frodyma attempted a cross. A defender kicked the ball right back to Frodyma, who promptly scored with a low shot at 39:00.

Plattsburgh held the 1-0 lead until the 81st minute when Chloe Hodge scored her fourth goal of the season for Clarkson to tie the game at 1-1. Hodge scored with a shot from just inside the top of the 18-yard box.

The stage was set for Villemaire's game-winning goal that was scored in the 89th minute and secured the 2-1 win for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh State's junior goalkeeper Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic), who improved to 10-3-2 on the year, made three saves for Plattsburgh State. Molly DiCaprio made two saves and allowed one goal for Clarkson in the first half. Elise Almgren (0-1-0) made four saves and allowed one goal after relieving DiCaprio at halftime.
