PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Plattsburgh State women's soccer received second-half goals from senior forward Emily Frodyma (Watervliet, N.Y./Catholic Central) and first-year defender Melanie Winters (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) to defeat SUNY Brockport, 2-0, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match on Friday at the Field House Complex.
Plattsburgh State (9-2-2, 6-1-0 SUNYAC), which has won seven of its last eight matches and sits atop the SUNYAC standings, next hosts SUNY Geneseo for a SUNYAC match at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16. Geneseo (10-2-1, 5-0-1 SUNYAC) is in second place in the SUNYAC standings. Plattsburgh State will be honoring its 10 seniors as part of Senior Day before the match. Brockport (6-6-2, 2-3-1 SUNYAC) hosts SUNY Potsdam for a SUNYAC match at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16.
Plattsburgh State had the majority of the offensive chances in the first half — outshooting Brockport, 11-2. The Cardinals had three shots that hit the post in the half, but the match remained scoreless at halftime.
The Cardinal offense broke through in the second half when Frodyma (Watervliet, N.Y./Catholic Central) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 71st minute. Senior midfielder Allison Seidman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) took a corner kick from the right corner that Frodyma headed into the goal to make the score 1-0.
The Cardinals would add an insurance goal when Winters scored her first-career goal in the 83rd minute. Winters received a pass from senior midfielder Lauren Vellecca (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) in the left side of the 18-yard box and one-timed a shot into the lower-left corner of the goal. First-year midfielder Catrina Maltes (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) also tallied an assist for her first collegiate point.
Time ran out on the Golden Eagles as the Cardinals held on for the 2-0 victory.
Plattsburgh State's junior goalkeeper Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic), who has a 9-2-2 record, made four saves in earning her fourth shutout of the season. Guliana Parisi (1-2-0) made four saves for Brockport.
