GENESEO, N.Y. – Senior guard/forward
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) scored 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor, but the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team fell to SUNY Geneseo, 63-50, on Friday evening at Schrader Gymnasium in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.
The Cardinals shot 35.8 percent (19-of-53) from the floor and 24 percent (6-of-25) from 3-point range in addition to forcing Geneseo into 19 turnovers. The Knights, meanwhile, held a 33-25 edge in rebounds and torched the nets with a 53.2 percent (25-of-47) mark from the field.
Plattsburgh State slips to 6-11 overall (3-7 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visits The College at Brockport tomorrow at 2 p.m. Geneseo rises to 14-3 overall (7-3 SUNYAC) with the win and hosts SUNY Potsdam tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Geneseo hopped out to a 13-4 lead in the first 5:04 of the first quarter, but an 8-0 run capped off by five points from freshman forward
Misa Dowdell (Far Rockaway, N.Y./Scholars Academy) brought the Cardinals within one (13-12). The Knights countered with eight unanswered points to close the opening stanza, with senior guard Sara Ciotti handing Geneseo a 21-12 edge through 10 minutes of play with a 3-pointer on the home team's final possession of the quarter.
The Knights' junior forward Kerrin Montgomery scored just 17 seconds into the second quarter, and Geneseo led by double digits the entirety of the frame from that point forward. An old-fashioned 3-point play by Montgomery staked Geneseo to a 16-point lead with 3:03 to go in the quarter, its largest advantage of the first half.
While the Knights cruised in the early stages of the third quarter, Plattsburgh State held Geneseo scoreless in the final 2:31 of the period while receiving a 3-pointer by Durnin and a layup by sophomore guard
Ly'rell Walker (Yonkers, N.Y./Roosevelt) to draw within 10 points heading into the final quarter.
Durnin and junior guard
Hanna Whitney (Keene, N.Y./Keene Central) each hit 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter to trim the gap to 10 points, while a made layup by sophomore guard
Kayla Doody (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) midway through the stanza also whittled the deficit to 10. Geneseo kept Plattsburgh State from mounting any sustained momentum and ultimately held on for a 63-50 win.
Beyond Durnin, Doody netted eight points, while sophomore guard/forward
Kelly Degnan (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington) had six points and four rebounds. Walker kept the offense running with four assists, while senior forward
Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) had six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
For Geneseo, Montgomery posted a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double, while junior guard Lindsay Halpin and Ciotti chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Ciotti pulled down seven rebounds and handed out five assists as well.
