GENESEO, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey earned a 2-2 overtime tie at No. 3 SUNY Geneseo in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday night at Ira S. Wilson Arena.
Plattsburgh State (6-9-3, 3-4-2 SUNYAC) and Geneseo (13-3-2, 6-1-2 SUNYAC) played a tightly contested first period with the game remaining scoreless until the 18:34 mark when Conlan Keenan scored his 13th goal of the season to put Geneseo in front, 1-0. An initial shot from just outside the top of the left circle went off the left post and bounced to the right through the crease behind Plattsburgh State's junior goaltender
Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) (6-7-3). Keenan knocked in the rebound on the right side of the crease for the goal with Andrew Romano and Kyle Hartman assisting on the play.
In the second period, Plattsburgh State kept the score at 1-0 as Poreda made key saves and the penalty kill successfully killed off three penalties, including about one minute of a 5-on-3 power-play. The Cardinals then tied the game at 1-1 at 18:19 of the second period when senior forward and alternate captain
Ryan Kuhn (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara University) scored his second goal of the season. After Kuhn forced a turnover just inside the Plattsburgh State blue line, Kuhn and freshman forward
Joe Kile (Troy, Mich./Johnstown Tomahawks) created a 2-on-1 opportunity. On the rush, Kuhn took a pass from Kile in the slot and promptly finished through the goaltender's five-hole.
Less than a minute later, Geneseo would answer with a goal of its own to take a 2-1 lead at 19:16 of the second period. Poreda stopped an initial shot that was redirected on goal from right outside the crease, but the rebound bounced to the right side of the net where Romano was able to get just enough on a shot to bounce the puck over the goal line before Poreda could grab it. Dan Bosio and Carson Kelley garnered the assists.
Plattsburgh State kept its deficit at 2-1 through the first half of the third period, before taking advantage of a five-minute power play to score the only goal of the period and force overtime. Sophomore forward
Christian DiFelice (Thorold, Ontario/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) circled from the high slot to the upper-right portion of the right circle and took a wrist shot that beat Geneseo's goaltender Aaron Mackay (8-2-1) to tie the game at 2-2. Sophomore defenseman
Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) and freshman forward
Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) garnered the assists on the goal that was scored at the 12:38 mark.
In overtime, Geneseo outshot Plattsburgh State, 7-1, but Poreda stopped every shot he faced for Plattsburgh State. Neither team was able to score and the game ended tied at 2-2.
Poreda made 34 saves in net for Plattsburgh State, while MacKay stopped 21 shots for Geneseo.
Shots on goal were 36-23 in favor of Geneseo.
Plattsburgh State went 1-of-2 on the power play while holding Geneseo to 0-of-5.
