Men’s Ice Hockey Falls to Oswego State, 4-2, in SUNYAC Play

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey fell to Oswego State, 4-2, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (6-10-3, 3-5-2 SUNYAC) continues SUNYAC play against SUNY Cortland at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. Oswego (10-8-0, 7-2-0 SUNYAC) plays at SUNYAC foe SUNY Potsdam tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Each team scored once in the first period as the game entered the first intermission tied at 1-1.

Oswego State took advantage of a power play as Alex DiCarlo scored his first goal of the game at 17:37 of the first period. Michael Gillespie passed the puck from the right point to DiCarlo, who one-timed a shot from the left face-off dot for the goal. Gillespie and Tyson Kirby tallied the assists.

However, Plattsburgh State's freshman forward Brendan Young (Lefroy, Ontario/Blind River Beavers) answered with his fourth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 at the 18:10 mark. Freshman defenseman Christian Dahl (St. Peters, Mo./Topeka Pilots) sent the puck from the left point toward the front of the net. Freshman forward Joe Kile (Troy, Mich./Johnstown Tomahawks) then corralled the puck near the right side of the net and passed it across the front of the net. The pass went off the skate of freshman forward Christian Thomas (Bloomingdale, N.Y./Topeka Pilots) to Young, who finished with a wrist shot from the low slot. Thomas and Kile garnered the assists.

Oswego State would score the only two goals of the second period to put Plattsburgh State down 3-1 going into the second intermission.

Josh Zizek put Oswego State in front, 2-1, with his eighth goal of the season at 5:42 of the second period. A defensive zone turnover by the Cardinals led to an opportunity for the Lakers. An initial shot by Jody Sullivan was saved, but Zizek was able to score on the rebound. Sullivan and Gillespie recorded the assists.

The score remained 2-1 until DiCarlo scored his second goal of the game and fifth of the season at 15:19 of the second period. On the power-play, Gillespie played a cross-ice pass from the right circle to DiCarlo, who one-timed a shot from the left face-off dot for the goal. Gillespie and Max Novick assisted on the play.

In the third period of play, Plattsburgh State scored a late goal to cut the Oswego lead to 3-2, but Oswego added an empty-net goal to make the final score 4-2.

Plattsburgh State's senior forward and alternate captain Ryan Kuhn scored his second goal of the season at 17:48 of the third period. An initial shot by freshman forward Hunter Alden (Walla Walla, Wash./Northeast Generals) from the right side of the net was saved. Kuhn then took a shot that went off the goaltender's pad and rolled just over the goal line and inside the left post to make the score 3-2. Alden and sophomore forward Cullen Kane (Buffalo, N.Y./Lake Forest College) recorded the assists. Alden tallied his first collegiate point on the play.

However, with Plattsburgh State's net empty for an extra skater, Gillespie was credited with an empty-net goal to make the final score 4-2 in favor of Oswego. Gillespie tried to pass the puck from the neutral zone to a Laker skating into the Cardinal zone. However, a diving Cardinal inadvertently redirected the puck into the Plattsburgh State goal at 18:18 of third period. Gillespie's goal was his fourth of the season.

Oswego went 2-of-6 on the power play and Plattsburgh State finished 0-of-6.

Plattsburgh State held a 33-23 edge in shots on goal.

Junior goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) (6-8-3) made 19 saves for Plattsburgh State and allowed three goals. Steven Kozikoski (2-0-0) stopped 31 shots for Oswego.
