BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Freshman forward
Mitchell Hale (Oakfield, N.Y./ Johnstown Tomahawks) scored his first collegiate goal, but Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey suffered a 4-1 setback at State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe The College at Brockport on Friday night.
Brockport (12-6-0, 6-4-0 SUNYAC) got on the scoreboard first when Ryan Romeo fired a slap shot from the top of the slot that found its way through traffic and past a screened goaltender to make the score 1-0 at 3:41 of the first period. Connor Hutchins garnered the assist on the play.
Plattsburgh State (6-9-2, 3-4-1 SUNYAC) tied the game at 1-1 when Hale scored his first collegiate goal on the power play at 5:11 of the first period. Quick puck movement by the power-play unit and nice passing from freshman forward
Christian Thomas (Bloomingdale, N.Y./ Topeka Pilots) and senior forward and alternate captain
Joe Drabin (Rochester, N.Y./Wenatchee Wild) led to a scoring opportunity for Hale in front of the net. An initial shot was stopped, but Hale was able to knock in the rebound for the goal.
It appeared as though Plattsburgh State may have taken the lead at 15:11 of the first period after a scramble in front of the Brockport net. However, the play was ruled to not be a goal. Brockport then took a 2-1 lead at the 15:54 mark on a short-handed goal from Jordan Renaud that was assisted by Danny Rock. After a Cardinal turnover, Rock and Renaud entered the Cardinals zone on a rush and Renaud finished with a wrist shot through the five-hole.
Forty-seven seconds into the second period, Romeo scored a power-play goal to increase Brockport's lead to 3-1. Romeo's goal, which came on a wrist shot from the high slot, was assisted by Anthony Hora and Hutchins.
The Cardinals were unable to break through for another goal and Brockport scored the final goal of the night at 18:11 of the third period to make the final score 4-1. With Brockport on the power play and Plattsburgh State's goaltender pulled for an extra skater, Jake Colosanti got into the Plattsburgh State zone and finished into the empty net. Ethan Solat and Corey Tam assisted on the play.
Junior goaltender
Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) (6-7-2) made 29 saves in the game for Plattsburgh State. Matt Schneider (10-5-0) stopped 24 shots for Brockport.
Shots on goal were 33-25 in favor of Brockport.
Plattsburgh State went 1-of-2 on the power play, while Brockport finished 3-of-8. Brockport also scored a short-handed goal.
