WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey extended its unbeaten streak to three games with a 2-2 overtime tie at No. 13 Williams College in non-conference play on Saturday at Lansing Chapman Rink.
Plattsburgh State (6-8-2) fell behind, 1-0, at the 4:29 mark of the first period when Williams' (9-4-1) Mac Carso scored his third goal of the season. Niko Karamanis and Connor Kucharski tallied the assists. As the first period went on, junior goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) (6-6-2) made key saves, including on a Plattsburgh State penalty kill, and Plattsburgh State started to generate more scoring chances. However, the game remained 1-0 in favor of the Ephs going into the first intermission.
After Plattsburgh State and Williams played an even first half of the second period, Plattsburgh State started to gain offensive zone time, but was unable to take advantage. Williams then got an opportunity after a neutral-zone turnover that led to a goal for Myles Cunningham at the 12:07 mark. Cunningham took a pass in the high slot and scored with a wrist through traffic for his third goal of the season. Max Fuld and Peter Christie assisted on the play that put the Cardinals down, 2-0.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard and cut their deficit in half when freshman forward Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) tallied his fifth goal of the season — his third in the last two games — at 15:44 of the second period. Tretowicz skated the puck down the ice from the Cardinals' defensive zone. Tretowicz then played a give-and-go pass to senior forward and alternate captain Joe Drabin (Rochester, N.Y./Wenatchee Wild) by the Williams blue line, which created a break to the net for Tretowicz. Tretowicz then finished through the goaltender's five-hole to make the score 2-1.
Plattsburgh State kept fighting and the Cardinals found the game-tying goal on a power-play late in the third period. Sophomore defenseman Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) took a slap shot from the blue line that went wide, but the rebound bounced to the stick of Drabin on the left side of the crease and he deposited the puck into the net to tie the game at 2-2 with 3:39 left in regulation. Araujo and freshman forward Christian Thomas (Bloomingdale, N.Y./Topeka Pilots) were credited with the assists.
The game went to overtime and Plattsburgh State's best chance come on a one-timer by junior forward Mike Falanga (East Haven, Conn./Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL) that went wide of the net. The Cardinals got a penalty later in overtime and ended the game on the penalty kill with the final score at 2-2.
