Women’s Soccer Stays Undefeated with 4-2 win at Union College

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior defender Sarah Bonner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) scored two goals as Plattsburgh State women's soccer stayed undefeated on the season with a 4-2 victory at Union College on Wednesday night.

Union's (1-2-0) Bella Dworkin scored the first goal of the match in the 15th minute, with Fiona Zimmerman assisting on the play. However, Plattsburgh State (2-0-0) netted the next four goals to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 lead.

Sophomore forward Emily Frodyma (Watervliet, N.Y./Catholic Central) scored her first collegiate goal in the 24th minute to tie the match at 1-1. Going up the middle of the field, Rachael Moran (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington)
played the ball ahead to Katie Matott (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton). Matott then touched the ball forward to Frodyma, who was running into the top of the left side of the 18-yard box. A Union defender attempted a tackle, but Frodyma unleashed a left-footed strike that went in off of the right post.

The score remained 1-1 until after halftime when Bonner scored her first goal of the night to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute. Bonner took a free kick from outside the top of the 18-yard box on the right side of the field. Her kick soared past the Union goalkeeper and into the net.

The score stayed 2-1 until the 75th minute when Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) scored her second goal of the season to increase the Cardinal lead to 3-1. From between the 18-yard box and the left sideline, Villemaire launched a shot that deflected off of the far post and into the net. Sophomore defender Jenna McCracken (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) recorded her first collegiate point with an assist on the play.

In the 82nd minute, Bonner would score her second goal of the night to push the Cardinal lead to 4-1. McCracken played the ball ahead into the 18-yard box, where Bonner got to the ball first and finished from close range. With the assist, McCracken recorded her first collegiate multi-assist and multi-point match.

Union's Emma Schleimer scored on a long-range shot that found the top portion of the net in the 83rd minute, but Plattsburgh State held on for the 4-2 victory.

Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (2-0-0) made three saves for Plattsburgh State, while Allison Sorkenn (1-2-0) stopped four shots for Union.

The multi-goal goal game is the second of Bonner's Plattsburgh State career. She also scored two goals in a 3-0 win over Cortland at home on Nov. 1, 2017.

Plattsburgh State's next match is against the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the Field House Complex on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 5 p.m. Union hosts Trinity College on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m.
