CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday at the Canton Tri-Match, defeating Elmira College, 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-16), before falling to host SUNY Canton, 3-2 (25-27, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 16-14).
Plattsburgh State moves to 5-9 overall with the results and resumes State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday, Sept. 27, with a 6 p.m. match at The College at Brockport. Elmira falls to 5-10 overall with the loss, while Canton rises to 3-10 overall with the win.
Plattsburgh State 3, Elmira 0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-16)
The Cardinals hit .181 for the match against Elmira, flooring 27 kills against just 12 errors on 83 total attempts. Plattsburgh State finished with the upper hand in service aces (11-4), total blocks (11-4) and digs (50-44) and limited the Soaring Eagles to .096 hitting.
Junior outside hitter
Rachel Mennonna (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) led a balanced Cardinal attack with six kills, while junior setter/defensive specialist
Allyssa Rock (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) and senior setter/opposite
Brianna Coon (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) combined for 22 assists. At the service line, Rock and Mennonna led the way with four and three service aces, respectively. Defensively, Mennonna and Hyde each defended 12 digs, while sophomore middle blocker
Ann Beauchamp (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) reinforced the front row with a career-high six total blocks (two solo, four assist).
For Elmira, junior outside hitter Lauren Smith landed six kills, while junior setter/right side Kassi Hastings doled out 15 assists and completed the double-double with 10 digs.
Canton 3, Plattsburgh State 2 (25-27, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 16-14)
Canton overcame a 2-0 deficit in sets won, prevailing in the third and fourth sets to force a deciding fifth. The Kangaroos sealed the victory with a 16-14 win in the fifth.
While Plattsburgh State outgained Canton in service aces (15-7) and digs (84-75), the Kangaroos held the upper hand in blocks (11-10) and hit .219 for the match.
Mennonna keyed the Cardinal attack with 14 kills and added 17 digs for the double-double, while Rock and Coon combined for 44 assists. Senior outside hitter
Megan Hyde (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) and junior libero
Abby Bone (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) posted career-highs in digs with 26 and 21, respectively, while Rock and junior middle blocker
Michelle Simmons (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) each landed five service aces. Rock's total served as a career-high. At the net defensively, Simmons and freshman outside hitter/opposite
Jenn Braun (Garrison, N.Y./Walter Panas) registered seven (two solo, five assist) and six (two solo, four assist) total blocks, respectively.
For Canton, junior setter/defensive specialist Tatum Lafrance, senior middle blocker Melissa McMaster and senior middle blocker/right side Marissa Ixtlahuac floored 19, 13 and 11 kills, respectively, while freshman setter Ashton Houppert dished out 42 assists. McMaster was credited with seven solo blocks, while senior libero Jenna Roat defended 28 digs.
