PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Freshman goalkeeper
Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) matched her career high with seven saves, but Plattsburgh State women's soccer suffered a 2-0 setback to No. 5 Middlebury College on Wednesday night at the Field House Complex.
Plattsburgh State (3-1-0) and Middlebury (4-0-0), which was the NCAA Division III National Runner-Up in 2018, were scoreless until the 14th minute when Middlebury scored to take a 1-0 lead. Olivia Miller took a corner kick, which was headed into the net by Virginia Charman.
The Cardinals held their own against the nationally ranked Panthers – keeping the deficit at one goal until the 42nd minute when Leah Salzman scored to make the score 2-0 in favor of Middlebury. After an offensive rush down the field, Salzman went one-on-one with Ennis (3-1-0). Ennis came out and challenged for the ball as Salzman dribbled it in. Salzman briefly lost the ball, but the ball got behind Ennis. Salzman repossessed the ball and finished into the net.
After halftime, the Cardinals came out attacking and would go on to outshoot the Panthers 10-5 overall in the second half. Plattsburgh State would not allow another goal, but the Cardinals were also unable to convert on their offensive chances as the match went on to end with the score 2-0 in favor of Middlebury.
Ennis matched her collegiate high with seven saves in the match. She also stopped seven shots in the Cardinals' 2-1 season-opening win over Castleton University on Friday, August 30, at the Field House Complex.
Ursula Alwang (3-0-0) made three saves in net for the Panthers.

Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) led all student-athletes in the match in both shots (9) and shots on goal (3).
Shots in the match were 14-3, including 9-3 in shots on goal, in favor of Middlebury.
Plattsburgh had three corner kicks, while Middlebury had two.
Plattsburgh State next faces Skidmore College in a non-conference match at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Field House Complex. Saturday's match is the Cardinals' Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) match.
Middlebury travels to Bowdoin for a NESCAC match against on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 12 p.m.
