PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State men's soccer defeated The Sage Colleges 2-1 to earn its second consecutive victory on Wednesday at the Field House Complex.
Early on in the match, much of the play was in the midfield area, but Plattsburgh State (2-3-0) took advantage of an offensive opportunity in the 16th minute to take a 1-0 lead over Sage (2-2-0). Sage's goalkeeper Lucas Bourdeau (2-2-0) played a goal kick to midfield. However, Plattsburgh State's junior midfielder
Cameron Richards (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) got under the ball before it could land and headed it to freshman forward
Devin Lambe (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Beacon), who headed the ball to senior forward
Chris Robertson (Thiells, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional). Robertson got behind the defense, dribbled into the top of the 18-yard box and finished with a left-footed strike into the lower-right corner of the net.
The score remained 1-0 until the 61st minute when Lambe scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal for the Cardinals. A Plattsburgh State defender played a ball from the Cardinals' side of the field that landed just outside the right side of Sages' 18-yard box. Freshman forward
Alex Graci (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) ran onto the ball. A Sage defender briefly kicked the ball away, but it went directly to Richards. Richards passed back to Graci, who promptly crossed the ball into the middle of the 18-yard box. Lambe, jumping, found the cross with his head and directed the ball into the upper-left corner of the net to make the score 2-0.
Plattsburgh held the 2-0 lead until the 72nd minute when Stephen Spraker scored for the Gators. Alberto Cannistraci launched a throw-in from the left sideline into Plattsburgh State's 18-yard box, where Spraker finished for the goal.
Sage would not get any closer as Plattsburgh State, which outshot Sage 12-4 overall and 6-2 in shots on goal in the match, held on for the 2-1 victory.
The Cardinals held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks in the match.
Junior goalkeeper
Ryan Wilson (2-3-0) (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) earned the win for Plattsburgh State, while Bourdeau suffered the defeat for Sage.
