PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State women's soccer took advantage of two penalty kick situations in the second half to complete a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Castleton University at the Field House Complex on Friday evening.
Plattsburgh State (1-0-0) outshot Castleton (0-1-0) 14-5, including 6-3 in shots on goal in the first half, but Castleton scored the only goal of the first 45 minutes of play. The Spartans' Shappy Tatum forced a turnover at midfield and got behind the defense for a breakaway. Tatum finished with a low shot, past the Cardinal's goalkeeper in the 42nd minute.
The Cardinals continued offensive pressure in the second half paid off as they drew two fouls that resulted in penalty kicks. Both opportunities would lead to goals.
Senior forward
Katie Matott (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) drew a foul in the penalty area, which resulted in a penalty kick that was taken by
Rachael Moran (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington) in the 57th minute. Moran's penalty kick was initially stopped, but Moran kicked in her own rebound to tie the match at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the 74th minute when sophomore forward
Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) was tripped in the penalty area. Villemaire finished the penalty kick into the lower-left portion of the net to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
In the match, Plattsburgh held a 25-13 edge in shots, including a 12-8 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper
Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (1-0-0) made seven saves for Plattsburgh State to pick up her first collegiate win, while Loren Henderson (0-1-0) stopped 10 shots for Castleton.
Plattsburgh State is back in action at Union College at 7 p.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 4 in Schenectady, N.Y. The Cardinals' next home match is against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 5 p.m.
