ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team won their first game against conference foe Oneonta 7-3 and lost the second game 6-0 on Saturday at Damaschke Field.
Plattsburgh State moves to 5-14 overall and 3-8 in the SUNYAC while Oneonta is 11-13 overall and 3-8 in the conference.
GAME ONE: Plattsburgh State 7, Oneonta 3
The Cardinals recorded 12 hits compared to the Red Dragons seven.
Senior
Rocco Cipriano (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) and sophomore
Erik Matz (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs.
Junior
Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) also went 2-for-4 and had one RBI.
Junior
Keller Kowalowski (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) had two hits and sophomore
Simon Alvarez (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) had one hit and one RBI.
Oneonta took a 1-0 lead after scoring off a single in the bottom of the first.
The Cardinals took a 2-1 edge in the top of the third after scoring two runs.
S. Bryant had a sacrifice fly to plate sophomore
Anthony Maag (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and senior
Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) scored off a ground out.
Plattsburgh State recorded four runs in the top of the fourth for a 6-1 advantage.
Cipriano hit a two-run single to drive in Alvarez and senior
Patrick Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches), junior
Stephen Lydon (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Suffolk CC) scored off an error and Cipriano scored off a single from Matz.
Oneonta scored off a double in the bottom of the sixth and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to make it 6-3.
S. Bryant scored in the top of the ninth off a sacrifice fly for a 7-3 lead.
Plattsburgh States defense and pitching staff held off the Red Dragons for the four-run win.
Senior
Matt Fox (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) picked up the win after pitching 6.2 innings and allowed six hits, three runs, walked two and struck out three.
Freshmen
Joe Mazzariello (Bronx, N.Y./Westlake) got the save after pitching 2.1 innings and only gave up one hit and struck out one.
GAME TWO: Plattsburgh State 0, Oneonta 6
Plattsburgh State had two hits while Oneonta logged nine.
Kowalowski and Craft recorded the Cardinals hits.
The Red Dragons scored two runs in the first off a single and a fielder's choice, one in the third off a single and three in the sixth off an error, a fielder's choice and a single.
P. Bryant pitched 6.0 innings and gave up nine hits, six runs, walked two and struck out two.
The Cardinals will finish their series against the Red Dragons on Sunday at 12 p.m.
