Doorey Picks Up 300th Plattsburgh State Career Win In Baseball’s Split With New Paltz

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State head baseball coach Kris Doorey picked up his 300th program win after splitting with New Paltz on Saturday at Chip Cummings Field.

Plattsburgh State is now 12-19, 6-11 in the SUNYAC while New Paltz moves to 12-18, 4-13 in the conference.

GAME ONE: Plattsburgh State 3, New Paltz 16

Plattsburgh State recorded 10 hits whereas New Paltz had 22.

Junior Stephen Lydon (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Suffolk CC) went 4-for-4 at the plate including a triple, while junior Keller Kowalowski (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) and senior Patrick Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) went 2-for-4.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after junior Kentaro Mori (Tokyo, Japan/Joto) singled up the middle to drive in Lydon.

The Hawks recorded five runs in the top of the third off a single, a passed ball, an error and two ground outs for a 5-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the fourth Lydon singled up the middle to plate Bryant to make it 5-2.

New Paltz recorded seven runs in the top of the eighth off two singles, a throwing error, a two-run double and two walks for a 12-2 edge.

They scored four more runs in the top of the ninth off a grand slam for a 16-2 lead.

Lydon scored again in the bottom of the ninth off a single from sophomore Simon Alvarez (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) to make it 16-3.

Senior Frank Finkbeiner (Stone Ridge, N.Y./Rondout Valley) pitched 7.1 innings and gave up 13 hits, six runs, walked one and struck out two.

Freshmen Joe Mazzariello (Bronx, N.Y./Westlake) pitched 0.1 innings and allowed one hit and two runs.

Junior Connor Lyons (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) pitched 0.1 innings and gave up three hits, four runs and walked one.

Junior Chris Dreier (Mahopac, N.Y./ Dutchess CC) pitched 1.1 innings and allowed five hits, four runs and walked one.

GAME TWO: Plattsburgh State 11, New Paltz 6

Both teams recorded 12 hits in game two.

Junior Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs while Kowalowski went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and senior Rocco Cipriano (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry), Alvarez and sophomore Erik Matz (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) all went 2-for-4 at the plate.

New Paltz took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off a double.

The Cardinals recorded four runs in the bottom of the second for a 4-1 advantage.

Alvarez scored off a walk and Kowalowski hit a three RBI single that plated senior Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West), sophomore Anthony Maag (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and S. Bryant.

The Hawks scored four runs in the top of the third off a two-run double and two singles for a 5-4 edge.

Plattsburgh State logged seven runs in the bottom of the third to take an 11-5 lead.

Cipriano doubled up the middle to drive in P. Bryant, Alvarez doubled up the middle to plate Cipriano, Alvarez scored off a walk, S. Bryant hit a three-run triple to drive in Matz, Craft and Maag and S. Bryant scored off a single from Kowalowski.

New Paltz scored off a double in the top of the seventh to make it 11-6.

The Plattsburgh State defense and pitching staff held off the Hawks to take the five-run victory.

Sophomore Matthew Triola (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) pitched 2.2 innings and gave up six hits, five runs and struck out one.

Senior Ryan Whalen (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) picked up the win after pitching 4.1 innings and allowed six hits, one run, walked one and struck out two.

The Cardinals will finish their series against New Paltz on Sunday at noon.
