PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Sophomore attacker/midfielder
Frankie Porcaro (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) scored a program-record seven goals, including two in the final 10 minutes of regulation, to help lead the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team to its first-ever home win, a 17-15 non-conference victory over Castleton University Monday evening at the Field House Complex.
Porcaro was on point from the opening draw, finishing with seven goals on 11 shots, which included a 2-for-3 mark on free-position attempts. Her seven goals eclipsed the former program record of five, set by freshman midfielder
Reece Wiley (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) against The Sage Colleges back on March 9, and her seven points overtook the former program record of five that was achieved on six occasions this season. In addition to her offensive output, she controlled seven draws and scooped up two ground balls.
In a competitive back-and-forth affair with 10 ties and eight lead changes, Plattsburgh State sealed the win with stellar play down the stretch.
After Castleton took a 15-14 lead following goals by senior defender Erin McKenna and junior attacker/midfielder Erin Shuttle (senior midfielder Megan Wood assist), the Cardinals tied the score at 15-all with 8:01 left, as freshman attacker
Emily Caoili (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) fed Porcaro for a goal. The ensuing five minutes featured back-and-forth play, and after the Spartans were unable to clear the ball, giving the Cardinals possession, freshman midfielder/defender
Claire Wiley (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) drew a foul inside the 8-meter arc.
Claire Wiley cashed in on that free-position attempt with 3:05 left to give Plattsburgh State a 16-15 lead.
Reece Wiley won the ensuing draw, and with 2:02 remaining in regulation, Porcaro also scored on a free-position shot to add insurance.
Reece Wiley took control of the next draw, and the team used the entirety of the 90-second possession clock before it ultimately expired with 25 seconds left on the game clock. While Castleton cleared the ball down the field, it was unable to get a shot off, and the Cardinals came away with the win.
Plattsburgh State rises to 2-14 overall with the victory and wraps up its inaugural season of competition on Saturday, April 27, when it hosts Buffalo State at 1 p.m. on Senior Day. Prior to the start of the game, the Cardinals will honor their three seniors:
Mia Tallerico (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun),
Kara Barber (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) and
Jenna Lazorischak (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie). Castleton slips to 5-10 overall with the loss and visits Rhode Island College on Thursday, April 25, at 6:30 p.m.
The two teams traded goals early on, as junior attacker
Katelyn McGlauflin (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) scored on a
Reece Wiley pass 2:58 into the game before junior midfielder Morgan Derosia countered for Castleton just more than a minute later. After Porcaro scored, junior attacker Megan Krumm found twine on a pass from Shuttle, opening up a six-goal surge for the Spartans. Shuttle buried the ball into the back of the net at 21:49 of the first half before senior defender Erin McKenna scored twice, with her first tally coming on a Wood helper. Wood and Derosia both scored to open up a 7-2 advantage for the visitors.
Porcaro and Derosia traded scores before Porcaro opened up a six-goal Plattsburgh State tear. Caoili scored two straight, her first of which was assisted by junior attacker/midfielder/defender
Leah Herman (Youngstown, N.Y./Wilson), before Porcaro netted two consecutive goals. Her second marker with 30 seconds left in the first half tied the score at 8-all heading into the halftime intermission.
Coming out of the break, sophomore attacker/midfielder
Kerri Corcoran (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) scored a woman-down goal 33 seconds into the second half, while Derosia scored woman-up just before the card expired to tie the game back up at 9-all. Shuttle cashed in on a Wood pass to put the Spartans up, 10-9, but Corcoran and Caoili each scored to put the Cardinals on top, 11-10. Castleton scored woman-down at 18:44 of the second half before Corcoran released the carding infraction with a woman-up goal just 19 seconds later.
McKenna and Derosia (Shuttle assist) put the Spartans back up with a pair of goals, while McGlauflin knotted the tally at 13-all just 32 seconds following Derosia's marker.
Reece Wiley buried a woman-up goal on a pass from freshman attacker
Sammy Tanner (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) to stake Plattsburgh State to a 14-13 edge, setting the stage for the final moments of the contest.
Plattsburgh State finished with the upper hand in shots (43-29), ground balls (29-19) and draw controls (18-16) in addition to going 17-for-21 on clears. Castleton, meanwhile, was 16-for-25 on clear attempts. On free-position attempts, the Cardinals were 5-for-8, while the Spartans were 4-for-7.
In addition to Porcaro, Caoili registered four points on three goals and an assist, while Corcoran netted a career-high three goals. McGlauflin (two goals) and
Reece Wiley (one goal, one assist) also tallied multiple points, while
Claire Wiley scored once. Tanner and Herman each dished out an assist. Porcaro and Corcoran each controlled seven draws, while
Claire Wiley came up big in the possession game with nine ground balls. Defensively, freshman defender
Megan Slovensky (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) caused three turnovers and collected two ground balls.
For Castleton, Shuttle led the way with six points (four goals, two assists), while Derosia (five goals) and Wood (one goal, four assists) each recorded five points. McKenna scored four times, while Krumm also tallied for the Spartans. Shuttle and Wood each controlled six draws, while senior midfielder/defender Kirsten Kruk helped Castleton defensively with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Freshman goalie
Alexa Cassidy (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick) made 10 saves in the win for Plattsburgh State, while senior goalie Samantha Hebb and freshman goalie Raven Payne combined for 17 stops in the loss for Castleton.
