PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team split with SUNYAC foe Fredonia on Sunday winning game one 2-1 with a walk off single in 11 innings and losing game two 4-1 at Chip Cummings Field.
Plattsburgh State moves to 9-17 overall and 4-10 in the SUNYAC while Fredonia is now 11-17 overall and 8-6 in the conference.
Junior
Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) went 5-for-8 at the plate between the two games and recorded a stolen base in each game.
GAME ONE: Plattsburgh State 2, Fredonia 1
S. Bryant went 3-for-5 at the plate in game one including a triple.
Fredonia scored their first run in the top of the second off a single to right center.
The Cardinals tied it up in the bottom of the fourth when senior
Patrick Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) scored off a sacrifice fly from junior
Stephen Lydon (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Suffolk CC).
In the 11th inning with two outs, senior
Rocco Cipriano (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) hit a double to deep left field.
Freshman
Zachary Hemphill (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) went in to pinch run for Cipriano and scored off a walk off single from Lydon for the 2-1 win.
Senior
Frank Finkbeiner (Stone Ridge, N.Y./Rondout Valley) pitched nine innings, faced 38 batters and recorded 110 pitches. He allowed seven hits, one run, walked one and struck out three.
Senior
Ryan Whalen (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) picked up the win after pitching 2.0 innings and struck out one.
GAME TWO: Plattsburgh State 1, Fredonia 4
S. Bryant, Cipriano and junior
Kentaro Mori (Tokyo, Japan/Joto) all went 2-for-3 at the plate in game two.
Fredonia scored two runs in the top of the first off a single and a wild pitch.
Mori scored in the bottom of the second off a single from S. Bryant.
Fredonia recorded two more runs in the top of the seventh off a single and a double.
The Cardinals couldn't get the bats swinging in the seventh and took the three-run loss.
P. Bryant pitched 0.1 innings and gave up two runs, two hits and walked one.
Whalen pitched 6.0 innings, faced 23 batters and recorded 95 pitches. He allowed two hits, walked three and struck out six.
Freshmen
Joe Mazzariello (Bronx, N.Y./Westlake) pitched 0.2 innings and gave up one hit and struck out one.
The Cardinals will finish their series against Fredonia on Monday with a single nine-inning game starting at 11 a.m.
