Second-Half Rally Falls Short in Women's Lacrosse's 13-12 Loss to Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Despite outscoring Fredonia in the second half and using a three-goal surge to draw within one with 40 seconds left in regulation, the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team fell, 13-12, to the Blue Devils in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday afternoon at University Stadium.

Down 13-9 following a woman-up free-position goal by Fredonia's senior midfielder Samantha Spiess with 4:30 left in regulation, sophomore attacker/midfielder Frankie Porcaro (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) started the rally with a goal with 2:05 remaining, using an assist from freshman midfielder/defender Claire Wiley (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro). Freshman midfielder Reece Wiley (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) won the ensuing draw, and less than a minute later, freshman attacker Emily Caoili (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) scored unassisted.

Claire Wiley controlled the next draw, and the Cardinals let just 39 seconds tick off the clock before freshman attacker/midfielder Allie Vangas (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall) found the back of the net to pull Plattsburgh State within one at 13-12 with 40 seconds remaining. While Porcaro won the ensuing draw, the Blue Devils forced a turnover and retained possession the rest of the game to seal the Fredonia victory.

Prims cashed in on a Spiess feed to score woman-up with 5:46 left in the opening half, while sophomore attacker/midfielder Alli Coon tallied just more than two minutes later. Coon connected with freshman midfielder Casie White for a goal before Spiess found senior attacker Jen Kershner to put Fredonia on top, 8-3. Caoili ensured that Plattsburgh State entered the half with the momentum, as she scored with three seconds left in the first half to cut the deficit to 8-4.

Vangas scored woman-up 23 seconds into the second half before freshman midfielder/defender Katie Durfey (Parish, N.Y./Mexico) found twine three minutes later. The two teams then traded goals, first with Porcaro countering freshman midfielder Alyssa Kissel's goal before Caoili responded to a pair of Fredonia goals (Coon and Kissel). Caoili's goal at 14:32 of the second half was assisted by Porcaro.
