PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team blanked the Norwich Cadets 10-0 in their home opener on Tuesday at Chip Cummings Field.
Plattsburgh State improves to 8-15 while Norwich moves to 5-16.
Senior
Rocco Cipriano (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and one run.
Senior
Patrick Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) went 2-for-3 at the plate and recorded three RBIs and one run.
Sophomore
Erik Matz (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and junior
Stephen Lydon (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Suffolk CC) went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Junior
Keller Kowalowski (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown), sophomore
Tom Bowe (Homer, AK/Homer) and Lydon all recorded stolen bases with Bowe stealing two.
The Cardinals scored their first run in the bottom of the first after P. Bryant hit a single to left field to plate Kowalowski.
In the bottom of the third, P. Bryant doubled to left field to drive in Matz and Cipriano doubled to left field to plate P. Bryant.
Cipriano scored in the bottom of the sixth off a fielders choice after getting on base with another double and advancing to third off a throwing error.
The Cardinals recorded four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Matz scored off a sacrifice fly from P. Bryant, Kowalowski scored off a single from Cipriano, Bowe scored off a single from Lydon and
Alec Fauvell (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) scored off a ground out.
In the bottom of the eighth, freshman
Marion Oferman (Central Falls, RI./Central Falls) hit a triple to deep left center to plate senior
Frank Finkbeiner (Stone Ridge, N.Y./Rondout Valley) and then scored off a throwing error.
The Plattsburgh State defense and pitching staff held off the Cadets for the 10-0 victory.
P. Bryant picked up the win after pitching 6.0 innings and only allowed five hits and struck out seven.
Freshman
Pierce Steinberg (Mahopac, N.Y./The Henry School) pitched 1.0 innings and allowed one hit.
Freshmen
Joe Mazzariello (Bronx, N.Y./Westlake) pitched 1.0 innings and allowed one hit and struck out one.
Senior
Matt Fox (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) pitched 1.0 innings, walked two and struck out one.
The Cardinals will travel to Middlebury on Wednesday for a single nine-inning game starting at 3:30 p.m.
