Carroll Nets Game-Winner in Men's Lacrosse's 7-6 Win Over Oswego in Triple Overtime

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Senior attackman Jake Carroll (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) scored 37 seconds into the third overtime period to lift the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team to a 7-6 triple-overtime win over Oswego State in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium.

Oswego won the third overtime's opening face-off, but Carroll forced a turnover right off the draw to give Plattsburgh State possession. Just seconds after the turnover, the Cardinals called a timeout. Eighteen seconds following the timeout, Carroll netted the game-winner, ending what wound up being the longest game in program history.

Plattsburgh State rises to 6-6 overall (3-1 SUNYAC) with the win and hosts Middlebury College next on Wednesday, April 17, at 4 p.m. Oswego falls to 7-3 overall (2-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and hosts SUNY Geneseo next on Saturday, April 20, at 12 p.m.

While sophomore attackman Connor Wolff (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) gave the Cardinals the early lead with a goal on a Carroll feed, Oswego scored two straight markers to take the lead. Junior midfielder Dan Doolan tied the score at 10:42 of the first quarter on a feed from junior attackman Evan Hollfelder before senior attackman Bobby Emerson connected with junior attackman Eric Kiel for a man-up goal less than a minute later. Sophomore midfielder James Sherwood (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) knotted the game at 2-all with 8:35 left in the first before Hollfelder staked the Lakers to a 3-2 advantage with 4:33 remaining in the first.

Despite each team having an extra-man opportunity and Oswego holding a 9-7 edge in shots in the second quarter, neither team was able to find the back of the cage, and the Lakers took that 3-2 lead into the halftime intermission.

Doolan broke the scoreless run with a goal for Oswego 4:02 into the third quarter, while junior attackman Jack Mullen (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored two unanswered goals to tie the game at 4-all heading into the final regulation period.

The Lakers netted a pair of goals (Doolan unassisted and Emerson from Hollfelder) to seize a 6-4 lead with 9:03 left, but Plattsburgh State was able to dig itself out of the two-goal deficit late in the fourth. Mullen scored unassisted at 4:01 of the fourth before Carroll converted on a Mullen feed with 3:09 to go to tie the game at 6-all.

Plattsburgh State outshot Oswego by a 4-0 edge in the first overtime, while the Lakers held a 5-0 cushion in shots in the second overtime period.

For the game, the Cardinals held the upper hand in shots (45-38), while the Lakers went 13-for-19 at the X and owned a 31-28 advantage in ground balls. Oswego was 1-for-2 on extra-man opportunities, while Plattburgh State was 0-for-3. On clears, the Cardinals went 21-for-28, while the Lakers went 19-for-20.
