Cardinals Sweep Golden Eagles in Non-Conference Twinbill

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team picked up two non-conference wins over Elmira on Saturday at Dunn Field.

Plattsburgh State improves to 7-15 overall while Elmira moves to 3-21.

GAME ONE: Plattsburgh State 7, Elmira 5

The Cardinals recorded 14 hits while the Golden Eagles had eight.

Junior Stephen Lydon (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Suffolk CC) went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.

Junior Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and sophomore Erik Matz (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) both went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and one run.

Elmira took a 2-0 lead after scoring in the bottom of the second off a double and again in the bottom of the third off a ground out.

S. Bryant made it 2-1 in the top of the fifth after singling to third base to plate sophomore Tom Bowe (Homer, AK/Homer).

Elmira scored again in the bottom of the fifth off a single to make it 3-1.

Plattsburgh State logged four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-3 edge.

Sophomore Anthony Maag (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) singled through the left side to plate senior Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West), S. Bryant hit a single through the left side to drive in senior Kentaro Mori (Tokyo, Japan/Joto) and Matz bunted to plate Maag and S. Bryant.

Elmira tied it 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh off a single and an error.

Lydon singled to right field to drive in Matz and senior Rocco Cipriano (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) doubled down the left field line to bring in junior Alec Fauvell (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and take a two-run lead.

The Cardinals defense and pitching staff held off the Golden Eagles for the 7-5 win.

Senior Matt Fox (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) pitched 6.0 innings and gave up seven hits, four runs, walked two and struck out four.

Sophomore Matthew Triola (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) pitched 0.1 innings and allowed one hit and one run.

Senior Frank Finkbeiner (Stone Ridge, N.Y./Rondout Valley) picked up the win after pitching 2.2 innings, walked one and struck out two.

GAME TWO: Plattsburgh State 5, Elmira 3

Plattsburgh State had six hits whereas Elmira had eight.

The Cardinals were up 2-0 after the top of the first where Jordan Godfrey (Castleton, Vt./Rutland) and S. Bryant scored on a throwing error.

They made it 4-0 in the top of the third after Craft singled through the left side to plate Lydon and Craft scored off a single from junior Santino Ycaza (Mastic, N.Y./Brentwood Sonderling).

Elmire scored two in the bottom of the fifth off a single and a steal and recorded one more in the sixth off a double to make it 5-3.

Once again, the Cardinals defense and pitching staff held off the Golden Eagles for the two-run win.

Senior Ryan Whalen (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) picked up the win after pitching 4.0 innings and only allowing three hits, walked three and struck out two.

Junior Justin Adams (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) pitched 1.0 innings and gave up three hits and two runs.

Fauvell pitched 0.1 innings and gave up two hits and one run,

Finkbeiner got the save after pitching 2.0 innings and walked one and struck out two.

The Cardinals will have their home opener on Tuesday, April 16 against Norwich at 3:30 p.m.
