DEMOREST, Ga. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team concluded their series with No. 25 Cortland with a 20-6 loss on Saturday at Loudermilk Field.
Plattsburgh State is now 2-11 overall and 0-6 in the SUNYAC while Cortland moves to 10-8-1 and 3-0 in the conference.
Cortland recorded 18 hits while Plattsburgh State had nine.
Junior
Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) had two of the Cardinals hits and one RBI while sophomore
Erik Matz (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) had one hit and two RBIs.
The Red Dragons scored one run in the top of the first off a ground out and four more in the top of the second off two triples and two ground outs for a 5-0 advantage.
Matz scored in the bottom of the third off a single from Bryant and senior
Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) scored off a wild pitch to make it 5-2.
Cortland scored 10 runs in the top of the fifth off a two-run double, a single, a double, a walk, another single and a grand slam to make the score 15-2.
Matz scored again in the bottom of the fifth off a single from senior
Rocco Cipriano (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) to make it 15-3.
The Red Dragons scored two more in the top of the seventh off a triple and a single for a 17-3 lead.
Freshmen
Jake Hutton (Albany, N.Y./ Colonie) scored in the bottom of the eighth off a double from Matz and freshman
Zachary Hemphill (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) scored off a ground out to make it 17-5.
Cortland recorded three more runs in the top of the ninth off a single, a double and a ground out for the 20-6 edge.
Freshmen
Joe Mazzariello (Bronx, N.Y./Westlake) pitched 3.0 innings and gave up four hits, five runs and walked two.
Senior
Ryan Whalen (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) pitched 1.1 innings and allowed three hits, five hits, walked one and struck out two.
Junior
Chris Dreier (Mahopac, N.Y./ Dutchess CC) pitched 0.2 innings and gave up three hits, five runs, walked two and struck out one.
Senior
Frank Finkbeiner (Stone Ridge, N.Y./Rondout Valley) pitched 2.0 innings and allowed five hits, two runs and struck out one.
Junior
Connor Lyons (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) pitched 2.0 innings and gave up three hits, three runs, walked two and struck out two.
Plattsburgh State will travel to the College at Brockport on Friday, March 29 for a 3 p.m. start.
