Women's Lacrosse Downed by Mount Saint Vincent, 16-12, in Back-and-Forth Game

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Despite outshooting the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 38-29, going 9-for-13 on clears and winning the draw control battle, 17-13, the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team fell, 16-12, to the Dolphins in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Riverdale Country Day School.
 
Mount Saint Vincent won the ground ball battle, 25-24, and went 12-for-19 on clears.
 
Plattsburgh State battled back to tie the game at 11-all, as freshman attacker/midfielder Allie Vangas (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall) scored unassisted with 18:19 left in the second half before junior attacker Katelyn McGlauflin (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) cashed in on a feed from freshman attacker Sammy Tanner (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) nearly two minutes later. Mount Saint Vincent countered with three goals in a span of less than two minutes, as junior attacker Amy Cohen tallied on an assist from junior attacker Shannon Dalton before junior midfielder Paulina Mandujano and freshman midfielder Veronica Sevivas both scored to push the Dolphin edge to 14-11 with 13:59 left in regulation.
 
Sophomore attacker Emma Dell'Aquila scored twice in the final 5:41 for the Dolphins, while Tanner found the back of the cage with 42 seconds left to complete the final score of 16-12.
 
Plattsburgh State drops to 1-5 overall with the loss and hosts 20-time defending State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) champion and No. 15 nationally-ranked SUNY Cortland in its inaugural conference game on Saturday, March 23, at 1 p.m. Mount Saint Vincent rises to 2-1 overall with the win and next visits Wilkes University on Thursday, March 28, at 4 p.m.
 
The Cardinals scored the first two goals of the game, as McGlauflin and Vangas each scored at 26:29 and 24:05 of the first half, respectively. Mount Saint Vincent scored three straight, beginning with goals from sophomore midfielder Morgan Pavlik and Dell'Aquila. Dell'Aquila connected with Sevivas with 19:36 left in the first half to give the Dolphins a 3-2 lead.
 
Vangas tied the game at 3-all 13 seconds later, but Mandujano put Mount Saint Vincent back on top with 17:39 to go in the first. Freshman attacker Emily Caoili (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) knotted the score at 4-all before sophomore midfielder Caitlin Elia, Pavlik and Mandujano opened up a 7-4 advantage for the Dolphins. Caoili scored unassisted and Tanner tallied on a pass from Vangas to trim the deficit to 7-6 heading into the halftime break.
 
Pavlik scored a woman-up goal 2:04 into the second period, while sophomore attacker/midfielder Frankie Porcaro (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) and Caoili drew the Cardinals back to even with 4:34 elapsed in the second half. Caoili ripped a shot into the back of the cage thanks to a feed from Vangas. Pavlik cashed in on a Dell'Aquila pass and Dell'Aquila scored unassisted to hand Mount Saint Vincent a 10-8 cushion.
 
Freshman midfielder Reece Wiley (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) drew Plattsburgh State back within one before Pavlik responded with a goal for the Dolphins nearly three minutes later.
 
Vangas led the Cardinals' offense with a career-high five points on three goals and two assists. Her three goals matched a career-high, while her two assists established a career-high. Caoili (three goals) and Tanner (two goals, one assist) each had three points, while McGlauflin scored a career-high two goals. Porcaro and Wiley each scored once. Vangas scooped up a career-high eight ground balls and caused three turnovers, while freshman midfielder/defender Claire Wiley (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) tallied seven draw controls.
 
For Mount Saint Vincent, Dell'Aquila recorded seven points on four goals and three assists, while Pavlik (five goals), Mandujano (three goals) and Sevivas (two goals) each tallied multiple points. Pavlik also finished with 10 ground balls and 11 draw controls.
 
Freshman goalie Alexa Cassidy (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick) came up with eight saves in the loss for the Cardinals, while sophomore goalie Allyson Weakliem turned aside 18 shots in the win for the Dolphins.
