Women's Lacrosse Edged by Norwich, 11-10, in Inaugural Home Game

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Despite holding an 8-5 halftime lead, the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team fell, 11-10, to non-conference Norwich University in its inaugural home game on Monday afternoon at the Field House Complex.

Freshman defender Megan Slovensky (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) caused a turnover and scooped up the ensuing ground ball in the left corner of the Cardinals' defensive third of the field with 1:39 left in regulation. Plattsburgh State was unable to clear the ball down the field, however, and Norwich ran out the clock to come away with the win.

Both teams finished with 28 shots, while Norwich controlled 12 draws to Plattsburgh State's 11. The Cadets were 13-for-19 on clears, while the Cardinals were 15-for-23. Plattsburgh State won the ground ball battle, 29-25, and was 3-for-9 on free-position attempts, while Norwich converted on three of its five 8-meter shots.

Plattsburgh State drops to 1-2 overall with the loss and next visits Bard College on Wednesday, March 13, at 5 p.m. Norwich rises to 2-0 overall with the win and visits Rivier University next on Wednesday, March 13.

Freshman midfielder Reece Wiley (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) scored the first-ever women's lacrosse goal at the Field House Complex, using a feed from freshman attacker Sammy Tanner (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) to score 1:16 into the contest. Freshman attacker Kate Winstanely tied the score 28 seconds later before freshman attacker/midfielder Allie Vangas (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall) scored on a free-position shot seconds later to put Plattsburgh State back up on top.

Winstanely, sophomore midfielder Kathryn Preul and freshman defender Britteny Poljacik each scored to stake Norwich to a 4-1 lead, but Plattsburgh State scored six straight goals to take a four-goal advantage. Tanner kicked off the run with an unassisted marker with 17:39 to go in the first half before finding freshman attacker Emily Caoili (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) for a woman-up goal just more than five minutes later. Sophomore attacker/midfielder Frankie Porcaro scored a natural hat trick, which included a woman-down goal, before Caoili connected with Tanner to close out the tear with 5:21 remaining in the first. Sophomore attacker Emily Schromm scored unassisted for the Cadets to cut the gap to 8-5 heading into the halftime intermission.

The turning point in the game came with six Cadet goals to open up the second half. Schromm scored unassisted 40 seconds into the frame before Winstanley found Preul for a goal less than two minutes later. Junior attacker Abriel Roberts netted a woman-up marker to tie the game at 8-all before a Winstanley goal on a pass from junior midfielder Mary-Kait Mace less than a minute after that gave Norwich the lead. Schromm scored a pair of unassisted goals, including one of the woman-up variety, midway through the second to finish out the Norwich surge.

Wiley scored each of the game's final two goals, first cashing in on a Vangas feed before finding twine on a Caoili pass nearly three minutes later.

Tanner's four points led the Cardinal offense, as she finished with two goals and two assists. Porcaro and Wiley each scored three times, while Caoili registered three points on a goal and two assists. Vangas also had a multi-point performance with a goal and an assist. Wiley controlled four draws, scooped up three ground balls and caused three turnovers, while Slovensky caused a career-high four turnovers and added two ground balls and two draw controls.

Schromm led Norwich with four goals, while Winstanley also had four points with three goals and an assist. Preul scored twice, while Poljacik and Roberts each posted a goal. Schromm controlled four draws and added three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Poljacik collected five ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control.
