PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team (9-13, 6-9 SUNYAC) beat Cortland (11-10, 7-7 SUNYAC) 71-58 Friday night inside Memorial Hall gymnasium.
The Cardinals out-shot the Red Dragons 40% to 29.2% from the floor and were 77.8% in free throws compared to Cortland's 52.2%.
Junior guard/forward
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) led the Cardinal with 23 points while freshmen guard
Kayla Doody (Troy, N.Y. / Tamarac) recorded 13 points and freshman forward
Ly'rell Walker (Yonkers, N.Y. / Roosevelt) had 12.
Junior forward
Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) picked a team high of 14 rebounds.
Both team recorded 14 points in the first quarter.
The second quarter was tied four times before Plattsburgh State took and kept the lead.
The game was tied 24-24 with 5:27 left when the Cardinals went on a seven-point run.
Sophomore guard
Hanna Whitney (Keene, N.Y. / Keene Central) drained a three and Clare and Durnin made layups.
Cortland came within three points of the lead but Durnin made two free throws to end the quarter to head into halftime up 35-30.
The Cardinals took an eight-point cushion to start the third after a three-pointer from Doody.
The Red Dragons cut the lead to two points and the Cardinals went on a nine-point spree.
Durnin drained a three, Walker made a layup, Durnin had another three and Walker made a layup for an 11-point advantage.
The Cardinals had a 13-point edge after a three-pointer from senior guard/forward
Bella DePasquale (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) with 2:06 left in the quarter.
Cortland ended the quarter with two free throws to head into the final quarter down 52-41.
The Red Dragons had their highest scoring quarter in the fourth with 17 points but the Cardinals scored 19 points.
Plattsburgh State took their largest lead of 16 points after a seven-point run with 1:54 left in the game.
Clare made a layup, DePasquale made two free throws, Walker made one free throw and Doody made two free throws.
Cortland was able to out-score the Cardinals 4-1 in the final minute to cut their loss to 13 points.
The Cardinals are back home Saturday, Feb. 9, to host Oswego at 2 p.m.
