PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The No. 23 Plattsburgh State men's basketball team (18-4, 12-3 SUNYAC) outpaced Cortland (15-6, 9-5 SUNYAC) 71-67 Friday night inside Memorial Hall gymnasium.
The Cardinals out-shot the Red Dragons 39% to 37.3% from the floor and out-rebounded them 45-33.
Senior forward
Jonathan Patron (Huntington, N.Y. / Harborfields) led the Cardinals with 23 points, junior guard
Nick DeAngelis (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) recorded 17 points and senior guard
Brandon Johnson (Greenburgh, N.Y./Woodlands) had nine.
Senior guard/forward
Chris Middleton (New York, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) picked a team high of 10 rebounds.
Plattsburgh State went on a six-point run to start the game.
Patron put in a layup, Johnson made a layup and Patron made two free throws.
Cortland tied the game 8-8 with 16:14 left and kept the lead within their reach until the Cardinals went on a nine-point spree with 11:11 on the clock.
Junior forward
Adam Jaquish (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) made a layup, Patron had a layup, Johnson had a layup and sophomore guard
Travis Cox (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Frederick Douglass Academy) drained a three.
Cortland out-scored Plattsburgh State 13-12 in the rest of the half but the Cardinals headed into halftime up 39-29.
The Red Dragons recorded 38 points to the Cardinals 32 points in the second quarter and came within three points of the lead with 12:13 remaining.
Plattsburgh Stare extended their lead to 10 points with 3:28 left.
Cortland out-scored the Cardinals 13-7 in the final minutes of the game but Plattsburgh State was able to take the four-point win.
Plattsburgh State is back home Saturday, Feb. 9, to host Oswego at 4 p.m.
