PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey suffered a 6-1 setback to No. 3 University of Wisonsin-Eau Claire in the 22nd Annual Great Northern ShootOut on Friday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State (3-4-1) will face No. 1 Norwich University (7-1-0) in the Great Northern ShootOut consolation game at 4 p.m. tomorrow. UW-Eau Claire (7-0-1) will face Middlebury College (4-1-0) in the championship game at 7 p.m. tomorrow.
In the first period, UW-Eau Claire got a power-play goal from Scott Munro at 3:25 to take a 1-0 lead. Adam Parsells and Jake Bresser assisted on the play. After Plattsburgh State kept the deficit at 1-0 for much of the first period, the Blugolds doubled their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Bresser, assisted by Andrew McGlynn and Jon Richards, at 18:50.
In the second period, the Cardinals were narrowly edged in shots 14-13, but the Blugolds scored the only goal of the period to make the score 3-0 going into the second intermission. Zach Kennedy scored with Nick Techel and Munro assisting on the play at 11:53 of the second period.
In the third period, Richards put Plattsburgh State down 4-0 with a goal at 1:42. McGlynn and Charles Weiand tallied assists on the goal. Richards then added his second goal of the night, assisted by Bresser and Jarrad Vroman, to make the score 5-0 at the 6:04 mark. Under three minutes later, McGlynn notched the Blugolds' final goal of the game as he scored on the power play at 8:42 of the third period. Munro tallied the lone assist on the goal.
Plattsburgh State's lone goal was scored by freshman defenseman Ryan Hogg (Duncan, British Columbia/Islanders Hockey Club) on a power play at 11:08 of the third period. Senior forward Ryan Kuhn (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara University) and junior forward Liam Lawson (Vancouver, British Columbia/Powell River Paper Kings) assisted on the play. Hogg's goal was his third of the season, Lawson leads the team with six points and Kuhn has a team-high five assists in 2019-20.
However, Plattsburgh State was unable to get any closer as the game ended with the score 6-1 in favor of UW-Eau Claire.
Junior goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) (3-4-1), who started in net for Plattsburgh State, made 29 saves and allowed four goals in 42:06 of play. Junior Lawson Fenton (Medina, N.Y./Coquitlam Express) made nine saves and allowed two goals in 17:54 played in relief of Poreda.
Zach Dyment (6-0-1) made 29 saves in goal for UW-Eau Claire.
Shots on goal were 44-30 in favor of the Blugolds.
Plattsburgh State finished 1-of-5 on the power play and UW-Eau Claire went 2-of-4 with the man advantage.
