PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team fell to No. 1 Norwich University, 5-1, in the consolation game of the 2019 PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut on Saturday at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State (3-5-1) and Norwich (8-1-0) played a tightly contested first period with each team scoring one goal. However, Norwich would outscore Plattsburgh State 4-0 over the final two periods to make the final score 5-1 in favor of the Cadets.
Coby Downs, who scored a hat-trick for the Cadets, tallied his first goal of the game at 7:05 of the first period to put the Cardinals down 1-0. Gabriel Chicoine and Félix Brassard assisted on the play.
Junior forward Rich McCartney (Hersey, Pa./Philadelphia Revolution) answered for Plattsburgh State with his second goal of the season, a power-play tally, at 14:54 of the first period. Sophomore forward Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) and senior forward and alternate captain Joe Drabin (Rochester, N.Y./Wenatchee Wild) assisted on the play that tied the game at 1-1.
Chicoine gave Norwich the lead it wouldn't surrender at 9:02 of the second period. Matt Burchill and Noah Williams garnered assists on the goal. Less than four minutes, later Downs tallied his second goal of the game (short-handed) at 12:55 of the second period.
Plattsburgh State remained in striking distance with the score 3-1 going into the second intermission, but Norwich finished off the game with two more goals in the third period. Jordan Hall scored at 3:24 of the third period to make the score 4-1. Ryan Boucher and Chicoine assisted on the play. Downs completed his hat-trick with an empty-net goal at 15:07 of the third period to make the final score 5-1.
Junior goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) (3-5-1) tallied 33 saves in net for Plattsburgh State. It was the third time this season Poreda has made at least 30 saves in a game. Tom Aubrun (8-1-0) stopped 26 shots in net for Norwich.
Shots on goal were 38-27 in favor of Norwich.
Plattsburgh State went 1-of-2 on the power play. Norwich finished 0-of-4 with a man advantage and scored a short-handed goal.
For his play over the weekend, freshman defenseman Ryan Hogg (Duncan, British Columbia/Islanders Hockey Club) was named to the all-tournament team. Hogg scored his third goal of the season in Friday's game with No. 3 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Plattsburgh State will next face non-conference foe SUNY Canton for the Cardinals' last game of the calendar year at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The Cardinals are holding their Teddy Bear Toss during the game against the Kangaroos. Norwich hosts Castleton University at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6.
