Men’s Ice Hockey Edged by No. 3 SUNY Geneseo 2-1 in Overtime

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Sophomore defenseman Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) scored for the second consecutive game, but Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey suffered a 2-1 setback in overtime to No. 3 SUNY Geneseo in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (0-2-0, 0-2-0 SUNYAC) outshot Geneseo (1-0-1, 1-0-1 SUNYAC) 9-5 in the first period, but neither team scored.

The game would remain scoreless until just after the midway point of the second period when Geneseo's Chris Perna scored a power-play goal at the 10:34 mark. The Knights played the puck around to Perna, who moved into the middle of the slot and scored with a wrist shot high on the glove-side. Tyson Empey and Conlan Keenan assisted on the play.

The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Knights until 1:49 of the third period when Araujo tallied his second goal of the weekend and the season. A couple of steps in from the blue line at the right point, Araujo fired a wrist shot that went in bar down over the goaltender's left shoulder. Freshman defenseman Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) tallied his first career point with an assist on the play.

Neither team was able to score for the rest of the third period and the game went to overtime tied at 1-1.

In overtime, the Cardinals got called for a penalty giving the Knights a power play. Just over a minute into the power play, Empey was left unmarked by the right post. Keenan passed the puck from the left circle to Empey, who was able to put the puck into the net before Plattsburgh State's goaltender could get over to cover the right post. Andrew Romano was credited with the second assist on the game-winning goal that was scored at 2:45 of overtime.

Junior netminder Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) (0-2-0) made 22 saves for Plattsburgh State and Aaron Mackay (1-0-0) made 26 saves for Geneseo.

The Cardinals went 0-of-4 on the power play and the Knights were 2-of-7 with the man advantage.

Shots on goal were 27-24 in favor of Plattsburgh State.

Plattsburgh State goes on the road to face No. 6 Oswego State in a SUNYAC game in Oswego, N.Y. at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8. Geneseo steps away from conference play for a home game against Nazareth College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Geneseo, N.Y.
