OSWEGO, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey suffered a 3-0 setback to No. 5 Oswego State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game on Friday night at the Marano Campus Center Arena.
Oswego State (2-0-0, 2-0-0 SUNYAC) scored the only two goals of the first period to take a 2-0 lead over Plattsburgh State (0-3-0, 0-3-0 SUNYAC) into the first intermission.
In the first minute of the game, the Cardinals had a power-play opportunity but were unable to convert. Plattsburgh State then successfully killed off two penalties to keep the game scoreless. However, Anthony Passero scored the first goal of the game for Oswego State at 9:04 of the first period. Oswego State won an offensive zone face-off at the left face-off dot and the puck was pushed to the slot where Passero scored on a wrist shot. Derek Brown assisted on the play.
A little over two minute later, the Lakers struck again for their second goal of the night. Oswego State won the puck in the neutral zone and entered the Plattsburgh State defensive zone on an odd-man rush. Josh Zizek passed the puck from the right circle to Carter Allen, who was trailing the play, in the high slot. Allen fired a wrist shot that went in high on the glove-side. Zizek and Jody Sullivan assisted on the play.
In the second period, the Lakers added another goal to put the Cardinals down 3-0 at the end of two periods. Oswego State's Tyler Currie skated the puck into the left side of the Cardinals' defensive zone and passed the puck into the slot where Travis Broughman was cutting to the net. Broughman took a shot that was saved by Plattsburgh State's junior goaltender
Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) (0-3-0), but Currie got to the rebound and finished for the goal at the 12:29 mark. Jeff Solow garnered the secondary assist on the goal.
The third period was the best period of the night for the Cardinals as they held a 15-8 edge in shots on goal. However, Plattsburgh State was unable to solve Oswego State's netminder David Richer (2-0-0) and the game ended with the score 3-0 in favor of Oswego State.
Freshman forwards
Joe Kile (Troy, Mich./Johnstown Tomahawks) and
Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) tied for the team lead in shots on goal (3) for Plattsburgh State.
Poreda made 26 saves for Plattsburgh State and Richer stopped 25 shots for Oswego State.
The Cardinals finished 0-of-2 on the power play and Oswego State went 0-of-3 with the man advantage.
Shots on goal were 29-25 in favor of Oswego State.
Plattsburgh State plays a SUNYAC game at SUNY Cortland tomorrow at 5 p.m. Oswego State hosts SUNY Potsdam for a SUNYAC game tomorrow at 7 p.m.
