PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team fell to non-conference St. Lawrence University, 60-39, in its 2019-20 home opener on Tuesday evening at Memorial Hall.
Plattsburgh State shot 24.6 percent (14-of-57) from the floor but limited St. Lawrence to 25 percent (4-of-16) shooting beyond the arc. The Saints won the rebounding battle, 44-37, while both teams committed 17 turnovers.
The Cardinals fall to 1-2 overall with the loss and next host Purchase College to open up the Cardinal Classic on Friday, Nov. 22, at 6 p.m. The Saints rise to 2-2 overall with the win and next host SUNY Potsdam on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m.
While St. Lawrence took an 8-4 lead with 1:18 left in the first quarter, the Cardinals closed the opening stanza on a 3-0 run. Senior guard/forward
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) knocked down a jumper and went 1-of-2 at the line during the Cardinals' next possession to trim the gap to 8-7.
Junior guard
Hanna Whitney (Keene, N.Y./Keene Central) handed Plattsburgh State a 9-8 advantage by scoring on the opening possession of the second quarter, and while the Saints went on an 8-3 tear, sophomore guard
Kayla Doody (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) and Whitney nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to stake the Cardinals to an 18-16 cushion. St. Lawrence scored the final five points of the half to enter the intermission with a 21-18 lead.
St. Lawrence scored the first two points of the third quarter on a made layup by sophomore guard Ava McCann, but the Cardinals countered with a 3-pointer by sophomore guard/forward
Kelly Degnan (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington). The Saints broke the game open with a 12-1 run and hit a layup at the buzzer to build a 43-28 lead through three quarters of play.
While freshman forward
Misa Dowdell (Far Rockaway, N.Y./Scholars Academy) netted four points for the Cardinals in the fourth quarter, the Saints wound up cruising to a 60-39 final score, leading by as many as 22 points in the final stanza.
Doody led the Cardinals' offense with eight points, while freshman guard
Mya Smith (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) netted six points coming off the bench. Senior forward
Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) pulled down nine rebounds, while Doody distributed two assists.
For St. Lawrence, junior forward Katie Frederick posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, and she also blocked two shots. Freshman forward Olivia Barringer drained a game-high 14 points in 22 minutes coming off the bench, while freshman guard Olivia Middleton dished out five assists.
