PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team limited Purchase College to 21.1 percent (12-of-57) shooting from the field and held a 51-38 margin in rebounds, as the Cardinals prevailed, 63-35, in their Cardinal Classic opener on Friday evening at Memorial Hall.
Plattsburgh State rises to 2-2 overall with the win and will face Hamilton College tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in the Cardinal Classic championship game. Purchase slides to 0-3 overall with the loss and squares off with SUNY Poly at 1 p.m. tomorrow in the consolation game.
Sophomore guard
Kayla Doody (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) led the Cardinals with a career-high-tying seven assists to go along with 12 points. Doody only took field goal attempts from beyond the arc, going 4-of-6. Junior guard
Hanna Whitney (Keene, N.Y./Keene Central) netted nine points and added three steals and two rebounds, while senior forward
Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) pulled down 10 rebounds, six of which came on the offensive glass.
For Purchase, sophomore guard/forward Shadai Plowden led the way with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The two teams battled during the early stages of the first quarter, and a Plowden jumper midway through the stanza drew the Panthers within 5-4. Plattsburgh State closed the half on a nine-point surge, and 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions from junior guard
Theresa Quinn (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) and Doody handed the Cardinals a 13-4 lead through one quarter of play.
Purchase went on a 6-0 run to begin the second, and a Plowden layup trimmed the gap to 13-10. Those wound up being the Panthers' final points of the half, as the Cardinals scored 11 unanswered to build a 14-point lead. Freshman guard
Kanesha Strider (Long Island, N.Y./Longwood) scored back-to-back fastbreak layups to stake the Cardinals to a 24-10 advantage heading into the intermission.
While Purchase and Plattsburgh State traded points to open the third quarter, the Cardinals broke the game open with a nine-point tear, and a Doody 3-pointer put the home team out in front, 38-14. Plattsburgh State entered the final regulation period with a 45-22 cushion.
The Cardinals continued to cruise in the fourth quarter, with Whitney hitting a trey with 3:34 left to hand Plattsburgh State its largest lead of the game (30).
Plattsburgh State shot 33.3 percent from both the field (22-of-66) and 3-point range (10-of-30) in addition to going 9-of-12 (75 percent) at the line.
