Men’s Ice Hockey Plays Fredonia to 1-1 Overtime Tie

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey played Fredonia to a 1-1 overtime tie in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) competition on Friday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (1-3-1, 0-2-1 SUNYAC) and Fredonia (1-2-1, 0-2-1 SUNYAC) each scored in the first period. Those goals turned out to be the only goals scored on the evening.

Fredonia struck first with a goal at 13:52 of the first period. Off of a face-off inside the right circle of the Cardinals' defensive zone, Ethan Kibris won the draw back to Victor Tracy, who got the puck at the top of the circle. Tracy quickly released a wrist shot that went into the upper-right corner of the net as Plattsburgh State's junior goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) (1-3-1) was briefly screened. Kibris tallied the only assist on the goal.

However, less than three and a half minutes later, sophomore defenseman Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) tied the game at 1-1 with his third goal of the season, scored at 16:35 of the second period. Freshman defenseman Christian Dahl (St. Peters, Mo./Topeka Pilots) fired the puck towards the net from the left sideboards. The shot was blocked in front of the net, but the Blue Devils were unable to clear the puck. Araujo grabbed the loose puck in the slot, circled to the bottom of the left circle, and wired a wrist shot into the upper portion of the goal. Dahl and junior forward Liam Lawson (Vancouver, British Columbia/Powell River Paper Kings) assisted on the play.

The Cardinals had more offensive chances than the Blue Devils throughout the game — outshooting the Blue Devils 13-8 in the first period, 16-8 in the second period and 16-6 in the third period. However, Plattsburgh State was unable to find a second goal as regulation ended with the score tied at 1-1.

In overtime, Fredonia outshot Plattsburgh State 3-1. As time was winding down in overtime, Plattsburgh State's freshman forward Joe Kile (Troy, Mich./Johnstown Tomahawaks) fired a shot that hit the post. Neither team scored and the game ended in a 1-1 overtime tie.

Poreda, the reigning PrestoSports SUNYAC Men's Ice Hockey Goaltender of the Week, made 24 saves on the night for Plattsburgh State. Anton Rosen (1-2-1) made 45 stops for Fredonia.

Plattsburgh State held a 46-25 advantage in shots on goal.

The Cardinals went 0-of-6 on the power play and the Blue Devils finished 0-of-2.

Plattsburgh State next hosts Buffalo State for a SUNYAC game at 7 p.m. tomorrow. Rock the Red Night is being held tomorrow night and fans are encouraged to wear red to the game against the Bengals.

Fredonia travels to SUNY Potsdam for a SUNYAC game tomorrow at 7 p.m.
